The US gained this land in the Louisiana Purchase Act in 1803. With this act, the US acquired all of the Louisiana Territory, formerly owned by France. The US had to pay France $11,250,000 for the land. This land was from the Mississippi River to about the Rocky Mountains. This land was formerly occupied by many Native American tribes.

Indian tribes were greatly affected by the Westward expansion. Settlers who were heading for California and Oregon trespassed on sacred Indian land while moving west. Railroads were built through Indian land and this interfered with the migration of Buffalo which were the Indians main source of food. What’s worse is that the railroads hired hunters to kill Buffalo for food for the workers. The government knew that the Indians depended on Buffalo and encouraged people to kill as many as possible, even providing free guns and ammunition to Buffalo hunters, Others like French settlers were upset at the new system of laws the U.S. was using. The government that they had was put to an end and no permanent system replaced it. A Governor they didn’t choose and that had no connection to the French was placed over them. Judges were prone to mistakes and the use of English instead of French in the courts was jarring.

The native people were very much damaged by the expansion… The Europeans greatly outnumbered and outgunned the Native Peoples. Americans felt as if god gave them the land as an excuse to kill the Native Americans. The native people were not helpless, and in fact killed many american people but there were to many Europeans for The native people to handle. Also many native people were killed by the diseases brought by the Europeans.

The US was justified in the legal process of gaining this territory because they got this land by purchasing it from France. Although, this land was occupied with dozens of Native American tribes that had lived there for generations, long before the Europeans arrived to North America. Moving the thousands of Native Americans was unethical and was unjustified.
