It acted as the boundary between the Democratic West and the Communist East while also demonstrating the tension between the world powers. The difference between the suppressive and economically depressed East and wealthy, prosperous West established credibility for the superiority of the capitalist, democratic model.

A senator from Wisconsin during the 1940s and 50s, his attitudes and accusations heavily influenced public opinion and the overall narrative of the early Cold War. To provoke attention and create fear, he voiced baseless claims that many facets and institutions in the US were run by secret communists and USSR sympathizers. This gained momentum and helped create a second Red Scare. His smear campaigns and domagic approach would be defined as "McCarthyism."

The Korean War was one of the defining conflicts in the Cold War as it saw nearly all NATO allies against the major communists nations as both sides fought for control over the Korean Peninsula. The war demonstrated the extent to which both sides were willing to become involved in external conflicts to support foreign governments who match their respective ideologies. The resulting stalemate reflected the balance of power between the divided world and signaled the continued effort for influence and control that would be pursued.

The war was between the capitalist and western supported Republic of China against the Soviet supported Communist Party of China. The internal conflict determined which government and ideology would control China. In 1949, the Republic of China was forced to retreat to Taiwan and mainland China officially became a communist nation. This was a major lose for the West as China and the Soviet Union became forces against Democracy and often supported the opposition in US and NATO backed conflicts.

Much of the early Cold War was centered around atomic development and insight on foreign policy ambition. The Soviet Union was far superior at espionage and intelligence during this initial stage as, for example, Stalin learned of the atomic bomb before Truman.
