This art piece express how the Chinese Immigrants were being treated. It informs the audience how the Chinese Immigrants were in search of a better life and how they got to where they are today. In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act took place, it was the very first significant law that restricted immigration coming into the United States. The Chinese were treated poorly and they were taken for advantage. Labor Unions did not allow the Chinese immigrants to become members. Labor Unions helped the Chinese Immigrants find jobs in factories and mills. Labor Unions were asking around companies and demanding them to pay the Chinese Immigrants low wages. They also helped the Chinese immigrants form their own Chinese unions.

Newspaper Expressing The Americans Goals

This newspaper piece explains how the whites goal was to get rid of the Chinese. The act was in effect for about 10 years. The purpose of the Chinese Exclusion Act was to restraint the path of Chinese Immigrants becoming American citizens. The act also prevented Chinese Immigrants from taking low paying jobs. The whites demanded purity of the white race. They thought the Chinese Immigrants were a threat to the United States. Chester Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882. The Chinese were forced to move to the West Coast due to the Whites. Only 105 Immigrants were allowed in the United States per year. European countries were taking over all kinds of different areas and places in China. This lead to instability for the Chinese. The Chinese left because they were scared and were in the constant feeling of fear. The Chinese were in search of something better which is the reason they moved to the United States but that did not turn out to well.

Photograph Expressing The Chinese Immigrants Emotions

The Chinese Immigrants in this time frame as if they were not worthy because that is how the Americans made them feel. They were pushed out of America that is supposed to be known as "Welcoming" to everybody and anybody as long as they follow the guidelines of being a citizen but in this case the Americans did not give them a chance. They absolutely were against the Chinese becoming American citizens because they thought of them as a threat. Which is one of the main reasons they were pushed out of the country and only a certain amount were aloud in per year. The Chinese only wanted a better life and they were willing to anything for that. They felt alone and as if they didn't have a voice to anything. They felt like they were being controlled like puppets. They wanted to be treated like everybody else. What the Americans did not acknowledge or want to accept the fact that everyone is equal and no one can control their race. They cannot just treat someone a certain way based upon that. They should not discriminize against others because they want to believe the worst of them. The Chinese had good intentions and wanted the best for themselves just like their country. This is way things are different today. The picture below shows that there were a ton of Chinese Immigrants in search of a better and more equal enviornment. They express their feelings in the photograph. They look sad and scared. The picture also shows that they were willing to do anything just to become a citizen.

In the front cover of Harper's Weekly Journal of Civilization, published in 1887, Chinese immigrants are coming in through San Francisco instead of Ellis Island, where other immigrants came through. In 1887, Chinese immigrants would come to the United States being they may have visiting family living in the United States or maybe on a business trip for work. Chinese labor immigrants came to the United States for new and better paying jobs than what they could get in China.

Many Chinese immigrants were labors and workers. They came to the United States for new opportunities and better jobs in the field they were skilled in. Chinese Miners would have many job opportunities in the US. Most factories and job in the US wanted to pay for cheap labors so they like Chinese immigrants because they could pay Chinese women really cheap. The amount of money these factories were paying Chinese labors were low but they were probably more than the Chinese were getting paid in China so they didn't mind.

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 banned Chinese labors to come to the U.S. in 1882-1943. From the picture of the first page of the Exclusion Act a push factor was that the United States was soon banning immigration into the United States so Chinese people wanted to move before that happened. Chinese people wanted a new life from their old life in China and wanted to move to the US to start it. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 stated that the government didn't want Chinese labors coming into the US. This shows that any kind of jobs in the US was a motive or a pull factor to come to the United States.

This newspaper was given out to the people of Los Angeles in 1905 and it states why the Chinese need to leave. William Rader writes about how they are not doing this to be prejudiced or racist against the Chinese but simply states how there are just too many foreigners that are coming in out of nowhere and the government didn’t like the idea of that. But Ng Poon Chew a supporter for Chinese Civil Rights spoke up and argued about the pull factors and why the Chinese need to stay. He first states that they didn’t come at an alarming rate to where they drove all white men out of jobs and that they are only coming to make decent money for their families that are badly in need. Also the amount of money they get for a job is not nearly the same amount as an average white American man, yet they still work hard which still helps the country.

Congress Notes on the Exclusion Act

These papers list notes from senators back in 1882 on the Chinese Exclusion Act. Many Chinese people left to make money and send it back to their families. Also they had to make money to repay the Chinese Merchants that paid their passage to America. Although they were not paid that well, there were also fun things to do in the United States such as smoking opium, gambling, and visiting prostitutes. There began to be too many foreigners so the Chinese Exclusion Act was placed to make a law to exclude some of the Chinese people from their country. Some Chinese people could only stay in the United States if they were laborers that worked for very little cash and also if they were here before 1880 on November 18.

Chinese Men that left to the U.S

Many Chinese immigrants were pulled towards the North to be involved with the California Gold Rush. Many single men also left to get a job and worked for awhile then returned home with whatever savings they had set aside from their jobs. With the gold rush many Chinese immigrants were able to open their own businesses, restaurants, and laundries. But after the gold rush many of them worked as agricultural laborers, railroad construction crews, and lower paying jobs. Many new kinds of diverse immigrants began to fight for jobs that were traditionally reserved for the Chinese. This led to a lot of hatred, riots, and racial suspicion towards any Chinese immigrant.
