Trait Theory

The theory was formed by Gordon Allport in 1936, he found a dictionary with over 4,000 traits and put them in 3 categories. Cardinal traits; ones that dominate over all others, ones that define you. Then you have Central traits; these are the traits that are the basic foundations of personality "honest","shy", and "anxious". Lastly you have Secondary traits; these are the traits that affect attitude. Things like getting anxious when talking to a large group of people.

Trait Theory Weakness/Strength

The weakness about a theory like this, is that everyone is different and with traits comes conflict. So you may have to adapt to ones traits and personality. A strength of the trait theory is that you can use main traits as an advantage to guiding someone. Or use their own traits as something to benefit the group.

I do agree with this theory because, the theory does allows you to use the persons traits and personality for the better of everyone. If someone is very well-tempered, you could use them in a situation that may require lots of patience.

The Behavioral Theory states that leaders can be made, rather than born. Leadership is a learned behavior, it is not something you are just born with. Anyone can be a leader. With this theory, you don't look/acknowledge the persons traits. Success can be defined in describable actions.

I do not agree with this theory because it does not allow you to use someones traits for the better. The theory also seems to make every leader the same, which is not a way to make a successful leader. Although the theory states that everyone can be a leader, which is true, but you should still use the persons abilities and personality to their advantage.
