Love?

Nick, he caught my eye. He was different from the usual crowd that I normally hang out with. He was careful, and flirtatious and funny when the moment was right. Even though he thinks that I'm careless. I don't know why I am the way I am. But I'm me and I love it. Nick is just so easy to talk to and I feel like I can let my guard down when I am around him. We used to call at the same time everyday. But after Gatsby's fight with Tom. Things were never the same with anyone. Especially between me and Nick. As soon as we got back to Tom's house he said, " '[He'd] ... be glad if you'd order me the taxi. I'll wait outside' " (Fitzgerald 142). Now I understand that everyone could feel the sophicating tension in the air and wanted to escape. But I simply asked Nick if he wanted to wait inside. And he snapped at me. It hurt, I never let people come that close. So I reached out one last time. And I asked if he wanted me to come see him, he blankly said no. So I hung up. I guess what we had was just a fling and all flings eventually come to an end.

Lies

Sometimes it's a challenge to figure out the truth out of all the words that I hear. But I can tell you one thing, " 'I don't believe ...' " (Fitzgerald 49) him. Gatsby, I don't believe him. His story does not add up all the way. So I tell Nick this once I find out that Gatsby wants to get Nick involved in his elaborate plan. And he even came to me and told me that he, " ... knew why I ... believed he was lying" (65). You must be an idiot to believe that San Francisco is in the Middle West. I gather and put together my opinions of people through rumors and facts. And in my heart I believe that Gatsby is liar. But who defines what is truth and what is not?

I know a lot. Because I listen. It's the only way to get information around this town. Whether it's true or a rumor is a whole nother aspect. But listening get you knowledge. " 'I want to here what happens' "(Fitzgerald 14), from listening I could tell you most anything about anything or anyone. About, " 'Tom's ... woman in New York' "(15); how " 'Gatsby bought that house so Daisy would be just across the bay' " (78). It helps me develop my opinions about people. Like a first impression before a first impression.

Being on the side

Jordan was not a main character in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. The novel is set in the time period of the Roaring Twenties. A time full of rebellion and fun for the heck of it. Jordan does not play a ginormous role in the story of Gatsby however she does represent a huge part of the 1920's. She embodies the young people. Those who rebelled and sassed back the social norms. Jordan was a tomboy, a tennis player, she wore a short hair style and she did not get married and have kids; like women were "supposed" to do. So even though she was just on the side, Jordan is more than just the opinionated best friend. In class we talk a lot about the individual. The definition of the word individual is single; separate. This has been a recurring theme throughout the course of the year in english class. From Self Reliance, Into The Wild (with Chris McCandless) and many more examples. I have personally learned that being an individual is much more than just being different. Being an individual is a mixture of a bunch of things from not just going with mass to following your own path into the wild adventure of life.
