Huckleberry Finn themes

There are three main themes that appeared throughout the novel: slavery, the hypocrisy of "Civilized" society, and moral education. This book is considered an allegory because he wrote this after slavery was abolished but black people still struggled with the society at that time. Mark Twain also emphasized that we are making assumptions about people who seem good, but if they owned slave, then they just bad people. It is impossible for somebody who owned slaves to be good. Twain portrayed the main character Huck as a free spirited and self-taught young man. He learned his lessons through experiences of the outside world. He decided things for himself and was able to determine what is wrong or right at the end of the novel.

Huckleberry Finn literary devices: Narrator point of view, tone, author’s purpose, dialect and symbolism

Narrator point of view is his/her perspective of the story. For example, in the novel, readers can follow Huck's actions through his perspective - first person perspective. Tone is the author's attitude towards the story. Mark Twain criticizes racism and the hypocrisy of the 'civilized" society. Author's purpose is the reason why an author writes a story. Mark Twain's purpose is to teach his readers about morality and how to distinguish good and bad people through Huck's character. Dialect is the variety of a language that a group of people speak, separated either by geography, class, or ethnicity. In the novel, Huck's dialect is from where he lives, which is Pike County. Symbolism is an element that authors use to convey ideas. Twain symbolizes freedom and civilization throughout the novel.

Realists avoided artificiality and prefer reality. Artworks from Realists portrayed everyday activities. They captured the real moment in the daily lives. Adolp Von Menzel, Thomas Eakins, and Winslow Homer are some of the most famous realist artists back then.
