The Musical Canon

The current Western Musical Canon, in my opinion, is extremely limited and elitist. Although the music included in this canon is complex and imposes a wide range of emotions, the current canon is reductionist, with the purpose of supporting Western classical artists as opposed to the wide range of global music. My definition of the Western canon includes music that has the most influence and the most prestige in the postmodern art world. This means that although the music that falls into this category is subjectively "good," it silences many different styles of music-- therefore limiting the human capacity, and limiting the evolution of postmodern music. In turn, I feel that we should break free of the modern "Western canon" mold, as this will further human evolution, spark curiosity in music lovers, and this will allow for the "losers" of music to finally express themselves to an audience that will listen.

Notice the complexities and the unique pizzazz in the tones, timbre, and rhythm of this piece. Non-western music includes a variety of unique sounds that Western music does not mater, therefore through focusing on different types of music from different parts of the world, we can discover new types of beauty in sound.

" When we are fighting for limited funding in the arts, the musical “losers” are typically shut out of revenue streams from government agencies, foundations, endowments, and corporate sponsorship."
