Regarding the protection of this castle we can mention several phases: In 1982 several associations demanded that the Ministry of Defense declare it a Historic-Artistic Monument and its restoration.
In 1989, the Oleiros town council acquired the castle to dedicate it to environmental education.
In 2001, the Center for University Extension and Environmental Dissemination of Galicia (CEIDA) was established there.
Between the year 2009-2011, works were carried out on the walls and damage caused by storm surges, between the Ministry of Public Works and the Regional Government of Galicia.
