Tessellations

This is the final product, the mediums i used where my mechanical pencil, I only used my mechanical pencil as I wouldn't be needing any colors for this piece. In a setting where the piece is shown in good lighting (not demonstrated in the photo), the viewers eyes would be drawn to the more detailed area, the viewers eyes goes across the piece from left to right as the detailed pillows gradually disintegrates. I emphasized on the shading around the borders of the pillows to emphasize shape and did shading of the creases and cracks of the pillow in order to demonstrate form.

This piece represents the suddenness of sleep and how we could cycle between being conscious yet unconscious in an instant, how everything seems so clear at one point yet suddenly so dull and hazy. As the viewers gaze pans from left to right, their attention lands on the shading of the pillow, if you look closely, you could see the shading getting rougher as it moves to the right, theres a gradual transition of the details of the pillow, as you continue panning your vision right, the pillows shading gets rougher, blurrier, and the borders become hard to distinguish. This symbolizes the slow yet fast process of falling asleep, it shows the suddenness and unexpectedness of sleep, and how there could be only a second of difference between you and deep slumber.

Drawing Styles

This is my “final” piece, I am slightly disappointed with it, though the proportions seem correct at first glance, if you stare long enough into it, you could see that the left quad from the viewer's perspective is a bit bigger compared to the right. The shoulder is also a bit swept forward. I am actually quite content with the shading, I think i did an ok job with the face, but a really nice job at the quads, I don't want to sound narcissistic but im just really proud of how the quads came out looking. I would add more detail into the abs but I feel like leaving it along with the lower left leg (viewers perspective) with a bit less detail just makes the piece feel a bit more balanced at the centerpoint of the piece (the center of the abdomen). The right legs balance out the upper body, the quads balance out with the head, less emphasis on lower left leg in order to maintain balance, less emphasis on the abdomens due to inherit lack of details, no shadows, and just looks nicer to put less emphasis on as it is the crossroads for all the joints.

Overall, I am quite pleased with how this piece came out, the proportions look good, the details look good, the styling on the left looks ok, it's just good overall. If I were able to red this project, I would fix how I drew the shoulders and maybe thin the quads a bit.

I really like the contrast between the simplistic tessellation and the varying designs within them, along with the vibrant colors that you used, it really brings out the details and complexities of the varying patterns. It would be great if you decided to continue on with more designs rather than coloring the remaining spaces with solid color. Overall, I think your tessellation has a lot of character and very eye-catching, which makes this piece very pleasant too look at.

One point perspective

For my one point perspective urban sketch, I started off by marking the vanishing point of the image and then drawing out the horizon line. I then drew out the basic guides for the roads, pavement, and the buildings too. I decided to remove motorcycles and a lot of flowerpots from my final because I felt like they were just unnecessary complex and time consuming. I worked my way from that care you can see in front to the roads, then the trees. I added some small details that were on the road, like the cars in the background and the cones, curbs, and the bushes and trees on the side. I then began to draw the buildings. The buildings were not fun to draw at all. The amount of details required was incredible. Having to constantly use your ruler to draw the edges has also been a painstakingly slow process so far.

Two point perspective

I hated drawing this specific two point perspective image that I have taken. But I still chose it anyways. This one is a bit challenging to me because of its overwhelming amount of leaves that there are and how it blocks my view of the building. You can already see the consequences of me losing all my motivation from the one point perspective for this drawing looks nowhere as detailed. For this image, I started the illustration by marking the corner of the roof the house then using that to find the horizon line and vanishing points. Then, using the two vanishing points, I was able to draw the guides for the house, the dome, and then for fence itself. Overall quite a similar process to do the one point perspective, only albeit a bit more- challenging and annoying.

Three point perspective

You can really see me run out of artist juice on this specific linear perspective drawing. I mean I did all of these drawings in one sitting so maybe it was because I was tired? For this three point perspective drawing, I had to lower the vertical vanishing point because its too high up for me to fit it on my paper, that is why It looks a bit distorted compared to the reference photo. Drawing three point perspective is incredibly tedious due to the fact that you have to practically line up all the edges to one of three vanishing points, which makes this my least favorite drawing to complete. Overall, I think that the building and the little overhang came out alright, I just think that the windows need al little work.

I really like how your 2pt linear perspective drawing came out. Greatly implemented linear perspective and everything seems too fit together perfectly. Additionally, your bold and confident lines which emphasizes borders and boundaries and your light and diluted colors complement each other very well. Your reflection was able to clearly communicate your process in making this drawing and the thought process the artistic choices you have made. However, one thing I would suggest you to work on are the small details like the windows for the lines don't fit with its surroundings. Overall, I think that this piece you have made was amazing and you've demonstrated your linear perspective skills well with it.

On Suri's Imaginary city

Really nice interpretation of the imaginary city. I really like how you can immediately tell the two distinct sectors apart. The use of vibrant colors against the dull colors in order to create contrast between the "fun" part of the city and the "depressing" part of the city is very well executed. The use of different structures ie. a theme park on one side and an industrial complex on the other just further emphasizes contrast. Something I would do to improve your art piece is to add some character into the background. Overall, this is a great art piece, good work.

Overall, I am quite happy with the results I have achieved on this project. I am most happy with the center flower which I used blending on, it just looks really good and I am happy that I drew something that looks pretty good. This project really pushed my out of my comfort zone regarding shading techniques. With the five techniques requirement, it forced me to implement techniques that I don't mainly use. I felt uncomfortable using both hatching and crosshatching in this project as the complex nature of the orchids shadows and its details created a great benchmarking tool for my skills. This allowed me to basically receive feedback on my skills with these shading techniques that are out of my comfort zone because I can compare the results I achieved with these techniques with the results I achieved with techniques I am comfortable with. With the conclusion of this project, I felt like I have achieved a greater understanding on shading techniques and how the should be implemented within my drawings. I felt like i have improved my skills regarding creating the illusion of depth in my drawings and furthered my understanding on the composition of tones and values. I look forward to more learning experiences like this in the future.

I think you did a great job with this drawing, you clearly demonstrated multiple shading techniques within your piece, which are all nicely implemented within your art piece. One thing I really enjoy about your piece is the minor details that you've paid attention to, like the textures on the cylindrical container and the wooden textures of the table. its nice to see such intricate details be implemented into your artwork and it shows that you paid close attention to the reference image. One thing that can be improved on however is the light source, Im not really sure about this one but it seems like there are some inconsistencies with how the objects interact with the light source.

I think you did a great job finishing this piece despite losing a significant portion of your progress because you misplaced the background. I like how you created the aurora borealis with chalk. it looks amazing, especially the variation in shade and color. It looks really natural and quite real as well. I also really like how you tried to make your piece look like a collage and how each layer has its own distinct styling. One thing I'd suggest is a little touch up to the foreground and background of the piece. I think a bit more detail would do wonders to it. Overall, I think you did an amazing job with all they challenges you've faced throughout the project, great work Brian!

On Toan's Color Theory piece

I love how your art piece has turned out. I really like the idea and vision you had for the pieces with the submarine being entangled by the comically large squid. I really like how you used color theory in your piece, specifically how the orange of the fat octopus complements the blue hue of the ocean, the sky, and the submarine. I also really liked the little bits of moss you added. The green really adds that extra detail the piece needs. One thing id suggest is darkening the shade of blue the submarine is in, I think it would add extra weight to the submarines presence and differentiate it more from its surrounding and contrast the big fat octopus more. Overall, I really think that you did a great job on this piece, especially with the ocean and the sky, and the white foams of the waves that forms when it washes up against the body of the submarine.

Albrecht Dürer Piece

This project was overall a really fun experience, from learning about Albrecht Dürer and what kind of techniques he used to create his pieces, to attempting to recreate a portion of one of his pieces, albeit in a different medium. The illusion of depth through value was heavily featured throughout this piece we chose to recreate, so I attempted to recreate this feeling or illusion of depth within my recreation using hatching and cross-hatching. Shading played a really important role in tying this piece together as it helped make the drawing less flat and dull and more accurate to Dürer’s original print. Texture portrayed through value is also a major part of my piece, I’ve implemented the skills i learned on creating texture through value from the last unit to create the wings and the creases within the garments of the angels, this greatly helped the visual aesthetics of the piece itself and also made it more accurate to the original print. If I had the chance to redo this artwork again, I would take my time shading with the felt tip pen because I was in a rush when I did it which did leave some mistakes behind on my piece, like how the sleeve of the leftmost angel is way darker than its supposed to be. Overall, I am really happy with how this piece turned out and couldn’t wait to see the completed piece after all the other segments have been joined together.

AI Generated Illusions Piece

This project was also really fun as it allowed me to challenge myself with trying to replicate my illusion with 3 layers of my choice. I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and used materials that I'm not all that familiar with, in this case I've used watercolor, chalk, and oil pastels. Since the majority of my artwork was in oil pastels, the ability to express intricate details such as texture is kind of limited, however, I was still able to create some texture using techniques like different shades of colors and how I applied them onto the paper. Although I made some mistakes with the oil pastels, I am still very proud of the results I have achieved which to me looks really nice, most importantly, you’re still able to see the illusion from my reference, which is good. If I were given the chance to redo this project, I would probably try and do more with my third layer, I think that I could of gotten more out of that than just some simple outlines.

Color Theory Piece

This project was overall really fun for me, and I really enjoyed creating different color theories with all of the skills I have accumulated throughout the entire year. This project has allowed me to experiment with mediums and materials that I previously haven’t ever used, it was really fun experimenting with how I do things, and it's really rewarding to see things go the way that you wanted them to. Even though poscas are new to me, and I have never touched one before until this project, they are quite intuitive to use and only takes a bit of experimenting to know how they behave, though I am pretty sure that I have much more to learn about poscas. One challenge that I had throughout this unit was silly little mistakes that costed my piece its “clean” look. I think this project has overall contributed greatly to my understanding of color theory and my ability to actually apply it in my pieces as I have much more confidence in what I am doing. Overall, I think the art piece turned out great despite all those small imperfections.
