Rachel has always wanted a child of her own, but after adopting an 8-year-old girl, she must learn to come to grips with the complexities of mothering a damaged child or risk losing the family she so desperately craves.
Pitch
It would be hard to deny that Rachel Wright has a good life. At 41, she has a devoted husband, an adorable stepson and a career as a police officer which she loves dearly. Despite this, what she really wants, what she’s always wanted, is to have a child of her own.
A previous pregnancy trauma has left Rachel feeling like a failure as a mother and unwilling to risk conventional conception again. Instead, she and her husband opt for adoption. Rachel is instantly enamoured after meeting 8-year-old Ruby, and Rachel and proceeds full steam ahead, committed to proving that she can in fact be the perfect mother she always knew she could be. However, it is not long before Ruby’s troubled past leads to challenging and chaotic behaviour.
The demands of parenting Ruby take its toll on Rachel’s marriage, career and mental stability. Isolated and out of ideas, Rachel feels like she is failing as a mother all over again. A woman who always had complete control of her life must rebuild herself and accept her new predicament. Ruby might not be the daughter she thought she would have but it is the one she has, and she will not give up on her.
