China isolated itself from the rest of the world. Specifically, they did not want European goods, and they just restricted trade to one city; Guangzhou (China). China exploited India for their tea in order to export it to Britian. (British love tea) In exchange for sliver, China would export tea, but China became angry with the imbalance of trade. Then, British turned to opium, which was in high demand in China. Due to the addiction, the Chinese government banned the import of opium (1796). This sparked anger.

(Hailey & Dan)

Due to the banning of opium, Chinese officials demanded that British opium in Guangzhou would happen no more. In response, the British sent a naval force to attack. After the attack, the Chinese were force to sign a treaty; the Treaty of Nanjing. This treaty was highly one-sided. It only benefited the Europeans while China suffered.
