  • da Gama would be appointed to the royal court of Libson
  • After being appointed to the royal court of Lisbon, da Gama held many connections to powerful leaders such as King John II.
  •  King John II would task him to fight back against the French, who attacked Portuguese ships.
  •  Later, King Manual appointed da Gama to sail around Africa to reach India for spices.

  • Before, da Gama's exploration was carried out, Portugal was a poor resource country that had to rely upon trade in order to grow and become a powerful nation.
  • Da Gama brought back spices from his explorations which resulted in the spice trade in Portugal. 
  • This was a great impact on the Portuguese economy. 
  • The spice trade brought more income into Portugal and brought more people into their country.

  • Born in 1460’s in Sines, Portugal. 
  •  When he was old enough, he joined the navy to learn how to sail.  
  • At the age of 37, the Portuguese king tasked him to find a path by sea to India.  
  • Weakened the Muslim’s power over the trade in India 
    1. Destroyed the boats of Muslims 
    2. Demolished trade ports 
    • After he returned home from his sail to India, he retired and had six boys 
    • He still retained connections with the Portuguese king after he stopped working 
    • After the death of the king, Vasco was tasked to go back to India to deal with the political instability within the country. 
    1. There he was named ruler of India 
    • He died in 1524 in Cochin, the same year where he was named ruler of India. 
    1. It has been theorized that Vasco died because he overburdened his body.

    2. The spices brought back from India brought great wealth to Portugal, solidifying their status as the lead in exploration during their time.

    * Africa was negatively impacted while fighting with Vasco da Gama
    - in result he killed hundreds of Muslims from Africa
    - Africa lost part of their population, they were not able to protect their trade routes.

    * India was also negatively impacted when Vasco da Gama came over. They were placed under rule of the Portuguese.
