Paperwork

Do not wait until the last minute to put your documentation in order. In fact, you should start organizing your documents eight to 12 weeks before you leave. First, you will have to consider your passport. Minors need a passport, including children, and you, too. Make sure you have enough blank pages in your passport for a new stamp. Then, check the expiration date of your passport. Some countries may require you to have a valid passport for a further six months from the date of travel. Not all countries require a visa. Visit the US Department of State's website and read the "entry / exit requirements" to corroborate which countries without a visa and how to obtain a visa.

Health
Check that your health insurance is in force abroad, most are not. If you do not have coverage, you will want a medical policy as part of your travel insurance. Visit your doctor and tell him which country you are going to travel to. You may need preventive medications or vaccines for diseases that are commonly found abroad. If possible, make your doctor visits and get health insurance for at least four to six weeks before leaving.
