“Out of the 4 themes studied in this unit, which one do you think is the most important. Answer should be in paragraph form (1-2) and be sure to include evidence from the text.”

Out of the 4 themes that we have studied in this unit, I think that pleasure and pain is the most important because if Jonas didn't learn about the bad/unhappy memories then he would have thought that Elsewhere was the best place on earth. In Chapter 11, Jonas gets the memory of snow, a fun time with the wind in his face and the fluffy safe pile of snow at the bottom of the hill. Then in Chapter 14, Jonas gets another memory of snow, except this time the snow was hard and covered in "bluish ice". Jonas went down the hill and broke his leg.

I think that if Jonas knew that there was a risk of breaking his leg before he got the memory of him actually breaking his leg, and if he was in the real world, then I think that he wouldn't have gone down the hill in those conditions. Without pain, People cannot understand pleasure because there is a risk to everything.
