Creating something with sewing skills

It makes me feel amazed and a sense of accomplishment using my own sewing skills for the children. I never learned how to sew before so when we sewed in class, I was learning something along the way to make something for the children. I never knew I was capable of sewing until I had proper help from our instructor to sew, as I never did while growing up.

Why it’s important for kids to play.

They play with toys that reflect things they know and will expand their imagination. Some or most times their friends will add unto the play.

I don’t sew so for the first time I made seal skin mitts it made me proud of myself. It thought me how to have patience more. And to see how excited the kids were to receive the pair. It inspired me to keep sewing. The first time to sew and had to be seal skin was challenging

How does it feel to focus on a cultural skill as part of your class work?

It feels nice to include a cultural skill to the course.

For me this is my first time to actually try sew things, and in a way it makes the class more fun

I love learning new techniques of hand-sewing and sewing with different materials. It makes me feel more connected to my culture and it also helps me to be patient with stitching with sealskins, leather, fleech, felt and other materials.

Focusing on culture skills has made me feel like I am pulled back to where my roots come from. Sewing was the way for Inuit, it has helped them build the skills we/they have today. It was what kept them busy, focused and alive.

It feels great, I mean like you are sewing for a person you love, appreciate and one thing is they’ll have something warm to use if its used. For something to play with, it makes me happy they have another toy, but something homemade, traditionally made. It’s actually pretty awesome to have made new things, for me it was some toys. I’ve made mitts before. But yeah, all within its means so much to learn and sew.

It feels amazing knowing ill let another child use my hand sewing skills project, hoping they’ll enjoy playing with the homemade toy animal.. and one day I wanna make more of those toy animal

its going to feel great when I complete my sewing for the children, it is taking me a while to sew the caribou because of the antlers. But when Im done with it and bring it to the daycare for the kids to play with it, I can’t wait to see their reactions and Im going to feel like I did a good job
