After leaving Romania in 1973, he settled in Switzerland.^[1] He studied mathematics and computer science in Zürich, receiving a Ph.D. from ETH Zürich in 1997.^[2] His Ph.D. thesis, titled Cyclotomy of rings and primality testing,^[3] was written under the direction of Erwin Engeler and Hendrik Lenstra.

For several years, he did research at the University of Paderborn, Germany. Since 2005, he has held a professorship at the University of Göttingen.
Major research
In 2002, Mihăilescu proved Catalan's conjecture.^[4][5][6] This number-theoretical conjecture, formulated by the French and Belgian mathematician Eugène Charles Catalan in 1844, had stood unresolved for 158 years. Mihăilescu's proof appeared in Crelle's Journal in 2004.

His great-grandson, Dan Andrei Geba, is also a valuable mathematician

He went to high school at Râmnicu-Salt. He then went to the officer school at Bacau,obtaining the rank of sub-lieutenant. In 1936 he married Lilica Popescu. At the beginning of the war he fought on the front in artillery against the Russians in Transnistria. In 1942 he fell prisoner and went through three prison camps. He was a prisoner in the Siberiancamps duringWorld War II. Grigore Gheba then joined the Tudor Vladimirescu Division and fought against the Germans. He was wounded twice and received eight decorations.

Grigore Gheba participated in the battles at the don's elbow, a tragic military operation in the history of the Romanian Army, where more than 150,000 soldiers died. ^[3] He escaped with his life, but was captured by the Russians and held prisoner^for a year.

 

Personal LIFE

In 1957,two years after the death of his first wife, he remarried Lucretia.

On September 6, 2004,in the morning, he had a heart attack. He died without finishing his new collections, which he was preparing to publish.

Born in Bucharest and of Greek origin, he studied physics and mathematics in Paris and Leipzig, later becoming a professor at the University of Bucharest and, in 1879, a member of the Romanian Academy. Considered to be the founder of many scientific and technological fields in Romania (and aiding in the creation of the Romanian Athenaeum), Bacaloglu was also an accomplished scientist. He helped create Romanian-language terminology in his fields and was one of the principal founders of the Society of Physical Sciences in 1890.

He was also a participant in the 1848 Wallachian revolution.

He is known for the "Bacaloglu pseudosphere". This is a surface of revolution for which the "Bacaloglu curvature" is constant.

One can find the Venn Building in the University of Hull, which is named after him.
In 1866, Venn published The Logic of Chance, a ground-breaking book which espoused the frequency theory of probability, offering that probability should be determined by how often something is forecast to occur as opposed to “educated” assumptions.

In 1580 he published in Madrid the book entitled Libro de Geometria, Practica y Traça. (Book on Geometry, Practice, and Pattern) , reedited in 1589. This book is a clear example of the application of mathematics to technology in its first modern states.^[3] It was also the subject of studies on philology by his terminology^[4] and by his exposition of the mode of his times.^[5][6]
