         <description><![CDATA[<div>Early Life: He was born on March the 18th 1895 at Câmpulung-Muscel, Argeș County. He attended the Ion Brătianu High School in Piteşti and the Gheorghe Lazăr High School in Bucharest. During that time, he discovered that he had a talent for mathematics, and started publishing in Gazeta Matematică, which is a well-known mathematical journal which is still published and used in schools. It was also then that he discovered his passion for poetry. Ion Barbu, the pen-name of Dan Barbilian, was known as "one of the greatest Romanian poets of the twentieth century. As a poet, he is known for his volume Joc secund ("Mirrored Play").​He was a student at the University of Bucharest when First World War  caused his studies to be interrupted by military service. He completed his degree in 1921. He then went to the University of Göttingen to study number theory with Edmund Landau for two years. Returning to Bucharest, he studied with Gheorghe Țițeica, another famous Romanian mathematician.​​   Achievements in mathematics:Apollonian metric​In 1934, Barbilian published his article describing metrization of a region K, the interior of a simple closed curve. ​At the University of Missouri in 1938 Leonard Blumenthal wrote Distance Geometry. A Study of the Development of Abstract Metrics, where he used the term "Barbilian spaces" for metric spaces based on Barbilian's function to obtain their metric. ​Ring geometry​Barbilian made a contribution to the foundations of geometry with his articles in 1940 and 1941 in Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung on projective planes with coordinates from a ring. According to Boskoff , this work inspired research in ring geometries, nowadays associated with Barbilian's, Hjelmslev’s and Klingenberg’s names. A systematic study of projective planes over large classes of  associative rings was initiated by D. Barbilian. Nevertheless, in 1989 John R. Faulkner wrote an article "Barbilian Planes" that clarified terminology and advanced the study. In his introduction he wrote:​A classical result from projective geometry, is that a projective plane is coordinatized by an associative division ring. A Barbilian plane is a geometric structure which extends the notion of a projective plane and thereby allows a coordinate ring which is not necessarily a division ring. ​          Academic career​:In 1942, Barbilian was named professor at the University of Bucharest, supported by a fellow mathematician, Grigore Moisil.​​As a mathematician, Barbilian authored 80 research papers and studies. His last two papers, written in collaboration with Nicolae Radu, appeared after he died, in 1962.​​       The poet Ion Barbu​:During high school he met the future literary critic Tudor Vianu, to whom he will be linked by one of the longest and most beautiful literary friendships.​His artistic beginnings were triggered by a bet with Tudor Vianu. Going on a trip during high school, Dan Barbilian promises Tudor Vianu that he will write a book of poems, arguing that the artistic spirit is in everyone. From this "bet", Dan Barbilian discovers his talent and love for poetry. Dan Barbilian said that poetry and geometry are complementary in his life: where geometry becomes rigid, poetry offers him a horizon for knowledge and imagination.​​​ The spaces of Ion Barbu's poetry:The Barbian artistic phenomenon was born at the point of interference of Poetry with Mathematics, that is why his poetry is very different from that of other poets, especially because of its hermetic character. More precisely, the poet's understanding of what poetry should be is closer to the conception of modern and singular poets like Stephane Mallarmé or Paul Valéry, than to the more general conception imposed by romantacism. Then we must not forget that the poet was doubled by a mathematician and that his way of thinking in the abstract spirit of mathematics was also imposed in the plane of poetic representations. Ion Barbu himself states: "As in geometry, I mean by poetry a certain symbolism for the representation of possible forms of existence… For me poetry is an extension of geometry, so, remaining a poet, I never left the divine realm of geometry." ​​​           </div>]]></description>

His dissertation, </strong><strong><em>Sur les </em></strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volterra_integral_equation"><strong><em>équations de Volterra</em></strong></a><strong>, was written under the direction of </strong><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_%C3%89mile_Picard"><strong>Émile Picard</strong></a><strong>. He was British, born in Yorkshire, and at this time Malta was part of the British Empire. He won several math and computing competions. Throughout his life he was a mathematician, a logician and a philosopher. He is most known for his work on Venn diagrams, which are named after him.
