What is it? Eating disorders are “a group of complex mental health conditions that can seriously impair health and social functioning” (Muhlheim, 2022).
School Counselor Role- School counselors can provide programming to parents. Counselors teach parents skills that a nurturing and supportive family environment is critical in eating disorder prevention. School counselors teach parents the importance of modeling positive body and food attitudes. School counselors include teachers and staff in prevention programs, especially physical education and health teachers. Create an affirming, supportive classroom environment and model healthy attitudes daily with their students, such as sharing experiences of being taunted for one’s own body can help empathize with students (Buser, 2012).

This group of disorders have controlling aggressive behaviors, self-control, and impulses. These disorders are a threat to other's safety and outside of societal norms (Elmaghraby & Garayalde, 2021).
School counselors must focus on individual students and the unique circumstances, cultures, needs, environments, and strengths. School counselors can identify triggers, then minimize encounters. Interventions such as relaxation training, cognitive restructuring, and behavior modification have had positive progress (Grothaus, 2012).

Small groups, short-term individual counseling, and school-wide anxiety reduction programs may help students cope. Counselors teach students to view their anxiety as a positive instead of a negative to empower them to cope with their anxiety (Conraads & Petty, 2019).
