Student Checkpoints:

Checkpoint 1 - Term 2, Week 8: In the SET Plan tab of OneSchool students will have completed: 

• My Intended Pathways (Q1-5) and  

• My Pathways Portfolio (Entered at least 1 pathway portfolio, preferably two, so a backup plan is in place).

Checkpoint 2 - Term 2, Week 9: Students have made preliminary selections of 6 subjects (and 1 backup preference). 

Checkpoint 3 - Term 3, Week 1:

Students will complete My Course of Study (final subject selection) in line with their Semester 1 results and Recommendations for Success. Double check that you see all 3 blue ticks in the Submit SET Plan tab (see image above).

• Gain a Queensland certificate of Education (QCE) or Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA), or Certificate III or higher VET qualification.

• Have participated in an eligible option for two years after they cease being of compulsory school age.

• Paid Employment or combined with training.

• Turn 17.

What does a good SET plan do?

• Helps you explore LOTS of careers so you can get an idea of what your goals are and understand the different options.

• Works as a tool to help achieve your learning goals during your senior years and for your future after school.

• Assists you to explore pathways across education, training and employment areas.

• Helps you to communicate with your parents or carers, and with staff from your school about your future options and preferences.

The four-step SET plan process

Step 1 Thinking about the future
Step 2 Exploring options
Step 3 Documenting the plan
Step 4 Implementing the plan

These subjects are vocational courses (e.g. Certificates I, II or III) that are delivered by BrisbaneSDE teachers, and are included in the BrisbaneSDE timetable.
If you choose an internal VET subject, you must be able to use your webcam and microphone so that the teacher can observe you during class and assessments.

Entry requirements consist of MERIT and ELIGIBILITY

MERIT

ATAR – which is achieved by doing the ATAR pathway through Year 11 and 12

OR

SELECTION RANK – which is achieved by doing a Cert III / IV / Diploma through Tafe, or as one of your subjects in Year 11 and 12

ELIGIBILITY

SUBJECT PREREQUISITES

To get into a lot of courses you must have studied and passed specific senior “general” subjects.

Not all courses have subject prerequisites.  Instead, they might have assumed knowledge and/or recommended study.  This means you can get in without having studied the subject.  However it is recommended that you do study it, as the uni lecturers will assume that you have studied it and teach accordingly.

OTHER PREREQUISITES

Some courses – eg: Creative and Performing Arts programs – may have interviews/portfolios/auditions that you will need to do in order to get in.

Some courses – eg: Medicine or Dentistry – may require you to do an extra exam as well as getting an ATAR

FNS20120 Certificate II in Financial Services (1 year course)

FSK20119 Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (2 year course)

ICT20120 Certificate II in Applied Digital Technologies

CHC24015 Certificate II in Active Volunteering (1 year course, with IVET Institute Pty Ltd as RTO)

BSB30120 Certificate III in Business (2 year course, with IVET Institute Pty Ltd as RTO)

Not necessarily - VET qualifications require students to demonstrate skills and knowledge in a workplace context and, depending on the level of qualification, will be expected to perform these tasks using foundation skills that include teamwork, problem-solving, planning and organising, and self-management.

“They’re less demanding”

This depends on what you consider to be "demanding" in a subject, of course. While there are no long essays to write or exams to study for in VET subjects, there are various forms of assessment to complete, including answering questions including discussing answers with the assessor, and demonstrating practical skills while being observed. This is why attendance at all lessons for VET subjects is required - assessment can't be signed off unless the assessor has observed the student completing the tasks.

“There’s no homework”

Tasks that can't be completed during class must be completed for homework. Just as in the workplace your employer expects you to complete the tasks set, in a VET subject, which simulates a workplace, you are expected to complete the tasks set, which includes finishing them for homework when necessary.

As a requirement under the Standards for RTOs 2025, students who are considering enrolling in a VET qualification must be advised about the suitability of their chosen VET qualification, with regards to the language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) and digital literacy skills it requires. To facilitate this, students will be required to undertake short indicative testing before adding a VET qualification to their subject selections.

More information will be provided about this during SET Planning preparation.

Requirements for success in a VET subject:

VET subjects are competency-based, meaning that students need to regularly attend lessons and actively participate, using their microphone, so that skills can be observed.

There are no exams but once an assessment is completed students may need to reattempt it before they can be deemed ‘satisfactory’ and ‘competent’ for the related unit/s of competency. This means that they will need to complete work outside of the lesson times as well as during lessons.
