As the founder of the Standard Oil Company, Rockefeller became one of the world's wealthiest men. Born into the modest circumstances in upstate New York, he entered the oil business in 1863. In 1870, he established Standard Oil, which by the early 1880s controlled almost 90% of U.S. oil refineries and pipelines. Critics accused Rockefeller of engaging in unethical practices in order to gain a monopoly in the industry. Standard Oil originally followed the path of horizontal integration, but later turned toward vertical integration. in 1911, the Supreme Court found Standard Oil in violation of anti-trust laws and ordered it to dissolve. Rockefeller reshaped the oil industry.
