This poem inspired me during a violent time in my past where I felt caged. I wrote my version. I couldn't have been more that a teenager, but I still tear up as I read either poem

How Can The Caged Bird Fly

How can the caged bird fly? When the only knowledge of flying is what is in her dreams.

Caged from birth, occasionally changing owners but remaining caged none the less.

Never truly knowing what the wind feels like flowing through her feathers or the feeling of walking on clouds

Not knowing how to brave the excitement and dangers, with no teachers, no mentors, no one to guide the way.

Alone in her cage she sits and cries.

My "it" moment involved me going to the Women's Flat Track Derby Association's World Championships that happened to be in Nashville. As a woman who plays roller derby, I was able to sit back and watch in awe as the athletes that I looked up to performed jumps, hits and passes five feet in front of me. I was also able to meet my inspiration as her team won the championships. I was fully immersed in everything around me. I came not even knowing what it would be like to sit as a spectator, to not be in skates.

Hamlet "it" moment for David Tennant

In PBS's Shakespeare Uncovered, David Tennant speaks about how the scene where Hamlet holds "Yorick's skull has become "cliche." Holding a skull loses the meaning of staring into the dead eye sockets of someone he once knew. It doesn't have that same effect anymore. Polish composer and pianist, André Tchaikovsky donated his skull to used as Yorick in a "Hamlet." Bringing a real skull into the play makes it more real and genuine.

David Tennant explores a few ways that people approach "Hamlet" in the same way that Walker Percy describes how people come to see the Grand Canyon but fail to really see it. Tennant starts out by explaining, "One of the things when you come to 'Hamlet' is ridding yourself of the baggage that comes with it and just try to tell the story." As with the Grand Canyon, people flock to "Hamlet" with a preconceived notice of how it should already be before they even sit down. Percy demonstrates that when an audience does this and does not get the expected outcome; they feel cheated and disenchanted. It is as if they feel they did not have a valid experience.
