NATO was formed with the intention that an attack on any members of NATO was an attack on all of the members. This provided safety and defense for many countries while also combating communism. The Warsaw Pact was formed as a result of West Germany arming itself and also joining NATO. The USSR created the Warsaw Pact to protect itself and the countries in its spheres of influence. The Warsaw Pact also allowed for the USSR to exercise greater control on the countries around it and crush revolts.

Before the Berlin Wall was erected, people from both sides of Berlin could cross between the eastern and western half. Because of this, many skilled and educated workers moved over to the western side. This frustrated the Soviets, and they built a wall to stop the crossing. The Berlin Wall divided families and was a symbol of oppression. On November 9, 1989, the Soviet's announced people could freely cross the wall starting at midnight. The people swarmed the wall and brought tools to bring it down.

The 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état remained controversial as the democratically elected president of Guatemala was overthrown by the CIA with the justification that it was against communism. This happened after the president of Guatemala issued many reforms and tried to redistribute some of United Fruit's land to the people. This harmed U.S. profits and so the president was overthrown and the dictator Carlos Castillo Armas. The following leaders of Guatemala were authoritarian, but also backed by the U.S.
