The sound of pencils hitting the paper as I begin colouring, the earth tones of different greens creates a magical forest feel. I can feel the density of the paper underneath my hand as it brushes with every stroke.

Paper is incapable of holding its shape when wet

When exploring paper I began drawing on it feeling the texture change as the pencils colour spreads across the page. I then wanted to see what I could create folding the paper making it into boat and then a hat.

After my community visit I saw how different materials where used throughout the street and building creating various different forms of art, each representing something unique. I wonder if artists are asked to make something for a space or if they ask after seeing the area and being inspired.

I think thats its more than just schools that kill creativity, its adults and jobs and responsibilities that kill it. Its the way our society has decided to live that places such an emphasis on getting a job and growing up and being serious that kills creativity.

Paper allows children to explore and experiment using different materials and use their fine motor skills. Paper comes from trees which means that paper could technically be hundreds of years old or one year old. Paper can move through the wind or by being picked up and taken somewhere, it can be involved in lots of different activities like art or building.

We have seen paint used as finger paint, as experimenting with mixing colours, as a tool to add colour. Setting up paint is throwing it into tubs and sitting it on a table, exploring paint is showing the children what they can do with the paint and experiencing it with the children and asking questions and an inquiry into paint would be to delve deep into what paint can do and asking questions around paint and exploring with the children. Paint is amazing in ECE as if can provide children with a safe sensory option.

You can bring in art Aboriginal art work through pillows, hallway art, blankets, babies clothes and picnic rugs providing Aboriginal artists with the income. Can we do Aborignal dot painting in ECE “The short answer to this one, is no, you can’t.” (Staines & Staines, 2022)I strongly believe that if it would make Aboriginals upset that we are doing their style of art then we shouldn’t be doing it.

Inquiry is not about answers but about exploring and asking questions and promoting thinking. I will put more emphasis on art and having things set up in a meaningful way instead of chucking whatever is easiest on a table. The role of the teacher is to encourage thinking and ask questions.

Introducing new art medium- give the children opportunities to use a different variety of materials freely.Teachers role- to finish their work and take their time.

Extensions and follow up- save childrens work for next time if they aren’t finished and provide a safe area to do so.

Documentation- share with families and children.

Using different house hold items to make paint such as turmeric, beetroot, carrot, raspberries, cherries.

You can mould it easier, its found naturally in nature without any human intervention and it can be wet and not loose its structure. Connect back tot he earth when using clay.

Its important to enjoy the journey with clay, as I have experienced clay is tricky to manipulate and it is important to realise that in the end product. “This making is part of the final result, is part of the final end of the story.” (Thinking With Clay — Art21, n.d.)

Clay feels hard as you pick it up but the more you play with it the softer it becomes. I love playing with clay and it bring memories of being in high school attempting to create anything with clay and struggling. The smell can sometimes be a big yuck but I love the feel and the density of clay.

Clay can be found in nature so using clay can connect us to place, you could even take a walk to find some clay yourself. Materials assist us with explaining our story, we are able to use materials to be objects in our story and manipulate them to look the same as certain objects. We can encourage children to create art that is meaningful to them and ask them questions about their art so that they think about why they have made something.

Light can project to form shadows which tell a story of what things are doing, how they are moving and where they are going. Light can come from the sun, torches, lights, lamp posts but at the end of the day unless its a natural form it will require electricity. Light can move so from different angles there may be something new that can be seen in the shadow.

When creating art work using light there are other materials required to do so such as lightbulbs, metals, buildings, see-through objects and the list goes on.

Telling the students what we intend them to learn. Mini studios may be preferred especially for younger children so they can focus and have their one on one with the materials without being interrupted as well as the materials will stay in the one place and will be less likely to go missing. Materials could be seen as intentional elements because they have been placed there with the intent to encourage and help children learn.

Seeing materials as questions can encourage children to experiment more and ask where can this go our what can this make and not to have a closed mind on what an object can be so there is a more diverse range in what they can use the materials as. Letting the children know why an area is set up with what materials can help to get them thinking about how to use it and take care of it.

Asking families to bring in their materials they may throw away is a great way to resource new materials but also taking the children to the thrift store can be a great way to give new life to materials.

Anyone that works with clay makes me want to further my knowledge and handling with clay. They do such amazing work and the firing to form different colours is amazing.
