         <description><![CDATA[<p>-They came because the Virginia company of London got a charter to develop the land and make money.</p><p>-Northwest Passage to the Orient.</p><p>-England was overcrowded, and had a shortage of land, they wanted land to farm, trees for lumber, fish for food.</p><p>-They wanted to convert Native Americans to Christianity.</p><p>-not enough jobs in Europe.</p><p>-They wanted precious metals like gold /silver to make money</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>-82 of first 122 colonists died in one year.</p><p>-During the starving time, they had to eat: cats, dogs, rats, snakes, horses, shoe leather, and eventually...PEOPLE! This was because they spent too much much time looking for gold and not enough time farming. Also, the Powhatans surrounded the fort and trapped them there all winter!</p><p>-Dirty drinking water, swampy land  (not good for farming, and disease carrying mosquitoes.&nbsp;</p><p>-Diseases from poor tooth/ear hygiene&nbsp;</p><p>-John Smith had to leave, so they had no leadership.</p><p>-Food supply contaminated with worms.</p>]]></description>
