Stress from studies

The stress of studies was evident because he started looking for coping mechanisms outside academics. Instead of adopting positive coping strategies, such as time management or seeking academic help, YR resorted to spending time with friends in pubs on weekends as a way to escape from academic pressure. This maladaptive way of coping not only failed to address his stress but also worsened his academic performance.

As a result, his stressful academic experience led to:

1. Frequent lateness and absenteeism in practical sessions.

2. Plagiarism in his practical report, indicating a lack of focus and possibly desperation to keep up with workload.

3. Very low attendance overall, which ultimately led to him being barred from sitting for his examinations.

Thus, YR’s case shows how stress from studies can negatively impact academic behaviour, attendance, and performance, leading to serious consequences in his education.

Struggle with being independent

1. Academic Independence

At IMU, students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning.

YR initially enjoyed the freedom of university life, but once the subject matter became more demanding, he found it stressful.

Instead of developing effective study habits and self-discipline, he avoided academic pressure by socialising and going to pubs.

His inability to balance freedom with responsibility led to poor attendance, lateness, and even academic misconduct (submitting an identical report).

2. Time Management Challenges

Being independent means managing one’s own schedule without parental supervision.

YR often went out late with friends and could not wake up on time for Monday practicals.

This shows he struggled to prioritize studies over leisure.

Missing classes and practicals eventually led to low attendance (<80%), which cost him his exam eligibility.

3. Social Independence

Moving to a new apartment in Covelia and finding new friends gave YR more social freedom than before.

However, instead of building healthy peer support networks, he fell into habits (weekend drinking, neglecting classes) that worsened his academic standing.

This reflects difficulty in choosing positive influences and self-regulating in a new environment.

4. Personal Responsibility

When faced with the consequence of being barred from exams, YR avoided taking responsibility and tried to excuse himself with a medical certificate (MC).

This shows he had not yet developed the maturity to accept accountability for his actions.
