How is it ensured that students are aware of the learning goals on which they will be assessed and the assessment process that will be used?

Mr. Brody is very clear on the learning goals that students are expected to understand and apply. In the very beginning of class, Mr. Brody will have the students write down the unit lesson for the day. He will describe what the class will be doing, how they are going to do it, and what the final assessment or outcome will be for the class. The students are expected to listen when Mr. Brody is explaining the lesson for the day, because he often goes over the learning goals and the expectations of the assignment. For example, in the last class of my internship, the class watched a short film on 'Rikki Tikki Tavi'. They had already read the story half-way, and Mr. Brody was helping them understand the characters and plot of the story better by having them watch a movie. He explained that they must take notes on the film, because they will have to apply the plotline to their homework, and eventually a test. Mr. Brody explained that they must watch for the details given in the movie that their guided worksheets were asking them to record. The goals of the day were clear; watch for details of the story, and use the worksheet to record them and analyze them later. For the assessment portion of the assignment, students were expected to apply the story to their homework sheets, and then recall the info later on a written test. The process of the assessment may included a seminar on the story, in which Mr. Body is fond of doing in the classroom. It helps students hear details they did not catch from other students, and helps them think critically about a story or idea. Mr. Brody also uses the white board frequently to post expectations and the day's goals. Students are always given a way to know the goals for the day, and the whole week. It is up to them to follow and reach these goals. Mr. Brody is very clear that if students want to succeed, they must put in the effort. If they want to be good students or citizens, they must choose to be aware and seek the goals that are in front of them.
