Before being able to do SL.7.3, students must have met the standards of SL.6.3 (understand and evaluate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not). These 2 standards are very similar, except in 6th grade the student is learning to identify claims that are supported and are not supported by evidence. In 7th grade, the student is doing a deeper dive into these claims. Instead of just identifying them, they are evaluating them, figuring out how sound and solid the reasoning is, and determining relevance of the evidence. I connect this to a 7th grade student who has an IEP and is maybe a grade level behind in this area. If the 7th grade ELA teacher is asking the student to analyze evidence and reasoning of claims, they first need to be able to identify the claims. So I would need to work with the student to be able to identify the claims that are supported by evidence in order to do the 7th grade work. So my job would be to help the student close the gap and reach the 6th grade standard while at the same time working on the 7th grade standard.

Once a student has moved on from 7th grade and into 8th grade, the 8th grade standard SL.8.3 (Understand and evaluate a speaker’s argument and specific claims, evaluating the soundness of the reasoning and relevance and sufficiency of the evidence and identifying when irrelevant evidence is introduced) is again very similar to the 7th grade standard. The big difference is the addition of being able to identify when relevant evidence is introduced. The student cannot do this until they are able to adhere to the 7th grade standard. It's a deeper understanding of the evidence they are using, and determining if the evidence is really relevant or if it is not strong enough to support the claim. Again, for a special educations student who may be behind in ELA, an IEP goal would be to close the gap in order to try to keep up with the standards.

Before being able to do R.7.7, students must have met the standards of R.6.7 (Compare and contrast how different formats, including print and digital media, contribute to the understanding of a subject). These 2 standards are very similar, except in 6th grade, the student is simply learning how different formats can help contribute to understanding. In 7th grade they are taking a deeper dive into analyzing these different media's.They are specifically being asked to learn how to compare a written text to different media to evaluate how the different media types can portray the same subject. For students with an IEP, they may still be closing this gap and will need assistance in learning about the different media types and how they can portray a subject before comparing the different media types.

Once a student has moved from 7th to 8th grade, the 8th grade standard R.8.7 (Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using different media—print, audio, video, stage, or digital—to present a particular subject or idea and analyze the extent to which a production remains faithful to or departs from the written text) is again very similar but with another deeper dive. They will need to be able to compare the different media's techniques and portrayals of a subject before getting into the 8th grade standard. And will then learn to show how if the subject or idea portrayed in that particular media is the same or different from the written text, and show the advantages and disadvantages of that media. They will not be able to do this without being able to do R.7.7. And again a special education student with an IEP may not be able to do R.7.7 upon entering 8th grade and thus will need an IEP goal to close that gap and will need help from instructors to get to that point and be able to learn R.8.7.

Before being able to do W.7.5, students must have met the standards of W.6.5 (With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach). These standards are similar, but with a deeper dive when they enter 7th grade. They both focus on developing and strengthening writing by revising, rewriting, etc. But in 7th grade what is added onto this is to focus on the purpose of the writing and the audience of the writing. Students with an IEP may not have the 6th grade standard met yet. So in order for them to struggle less in focusing on purpose and audience, they must get help in closing the gap on just revising, editing, etc first.

Once a student has moved from 7th to 8th grade, the 8th grade standard W.8.5 (With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on how well purpose and audience have been addressed) is actually the exact same as the 7th grade standard. I did not realize this when choosing this standard to do prior and future connections and learning with. It appears that this standard must complex enough that it needs 2 years to master, focusing on core skills while at the same time continuing to learn this progression. For students with an IEP, this might be an advantage for them to be able to work on this standard for 2 years, thus with a teacher helping them focus on these skills and this standard, may be easier to close the gap and get up to grade level standards.
