I remember reading the TIPchart as a teacher and thinking, "How will get to the point where I can deliver lessons that score high on this scale?" Now, as an ITRT, I enjoy the feeling of constantly evolving lessons, working toward goals, and realizing that sometimes lessons need to go back to basics.

The TIPC has been an 8 year struggle for mastery. When I was introduced to it on my first day as an ITRT, I had no idea it had existed, but I had been striving for 7 years prior to do the same things in my classroom. As an ITRT, I have since been striving to understand it, implement it and coach others to do it. It has been a living rubric that has transformed along with my teaching and Henrico as a whole.

Working with my ITRTs over the years and being encouraged to use the TIPchart in my planning purposes pushed me to become a better teacher. It encouraged me to become comfortable giving students control over their learning experience and to step back as more of a facilitator. When I became more comfortable with it I realized that my students were more empowered when given opportunities for ownership. I felt myself pushing through to provide more experiences for my kids where they could apply and utilize their knowledge and skills rather than simply receiving and storing it.

I first experienced TIPC as a teacher through a coaching experience with an ITRT and became familiar with the language, but it often got lost in the shuffle on the day to day teaching. As an ITRT, I find that teachers find it overwhelming to look at the entire document so I usually focus on one area at a time. I would love better suggestions on how to implement it more frequently.

What has relly been beneficial over the years has been the life that the document has had. Just as ISTE has continued to refine and redefine their Standards, we also have been able to modify our own standards for students and teachers.

One thing I would like to see in future development of our TIP Chart is a more solid relationship with the ISTE Standards.

We may also want to create a secondary document (we have tried this in the past) that helps teachers see more concretely what each of these levels can look like in their instruction. Even though the H21 site does give examples of the highest implementation of the TIPC, there aren't a lot of resources that let teachers see the continuous development and growth that is needed to reach that level.

I actually like the TIP Chart. The 4 categories are simple, focused, and provide a good standard of reference. The part that is a bit confusing for myself and teachers is the rating scale. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish one level from the other. That needs to be clearer.

I was lucky (I think) to have a lot of experience as a TEACHER with TIP. I think around my fourth year I was exposed to this, and then used it frequently in lesson planning, and just overall as a way to measure good teaching.

The POSITIVE for me with the TIP is that it showed me how important reflection is for both teachers and students. The more I get into research the more I see the value in this- we were promoting self-regulation and metacognition (but at the time I didn't know much about those and why they mattered.

The NEGATIVE is that I don't completely agree that these four categories are the end all and be all.
