Stereotype

The word stereotype can mean many different things, but when I think about it in regards to discrimination I think of one definition. A stereotype is having a fixed idea, thought, or view of someone, something, somewhere, etc. that fits into a group. To stereotype is to think this idea of people or view them as that particular group because of the traits they display. In one of the video clips I chose, this can be as simple as judging someone on the clothes they wear and the coffee they drink.

In relation to this course and our assigned reading this week, I think that there is a lot of stereotyping done based on race, ethnicity, language, social class, sexual orientation, etc.

Prejudice

This is an opinion that is formed with no real experience or reasoning behind. Other words for prejudice are prejudgment or preconceived ideas. This comes from how we are raised or told how to think; it is passing judgment on something with no education on it. Again, just like stereotyping and discrimination, being prejudice to something can be about race, ethnicity, language, social class, sexual orientation, etc. This is displaying feelings or emotions toward one of these (or another) groups.

Like stereotype or stereotyping, there are more than one definition for this word. With the knowledge I have about the content of this course, I know that the way we are using the word discrimination, has to do with categorizing people and placing judgment on them. However, unlike stereotyping, discrimination takes this a step further by treating others different based on their culture, views, beliefs, etc.

There are many negative effects of stereotyping that our students can experience, such as not believing in themselves and trying to fit into a mold, both of which can serious harm the mental health of our students, and even make them feel unsafe in the school environment. A scenario that I have seen before is when a female high school student does not seek out a club or elective about mechanics, even though this is a big interest of hers. It is stereotyped that this is not the "gender norm" and she should not be in that type of class; these stereotypes make our students believe that they are different, don't fit in, are not worthy, and so many other things that prevent them from truly being who they want to be.

Students dealing with prejudice and prejudgment are more likely to have a poor view on themselves and their race/ethnicity, as well as experience more emotional distress. This is especially true for adolescents, as they spend a large majority of their days at school and with their peers.

Discrimination against someone's race/ethnicity happens often: for example Hispanic students are discriminated against as not being legal students. Negative effects of this discrimination in schools may result in students: not wanting to come to school, having trouble focusing or asking for help, have trouble making friends, reject their own race/culture, and/or only want to make friends with those within their race/culture. This is something that can cause depression, anxiety, and poor mental health for our students.
