I don't think women belong here, The Commander said as he locked in his seat belt" Mona wasn't like most people in her barrio, she overcame abuse, racism, and sexism to get where she is today. One night when frank was beating her she called the cops. The cops didn't do anything but take Franks side, and blame the whole situation on Mona. "Now listen lady, I haven't seen this guy break any laws, and he says he didn't and you say he did..."
"Listen, for the last time, there is no crime here. So your husband had a few drinks and got mad because you burned dinner or said the wrong thing, whatever. So he hit you. Get over it. He's sorry, you're sorry. Everybody's sorry. Okay?"
"As a matter of fact," the cop continued, pointing at Frank's arm, "with these scratches here, I could take you in for assault."

Mona wasn't always given a fair shot, she got a lot of attention from her past. Many police officers thought she was a spy for the Santa Ana street gang, She was also a women, and male police officers thought women should be police officers. "An old favorite had resurfaced, one I had heard when I was a clerk:I was a spy for the Santa Ana street gangs, an undercover banger with a badge who was collecting intelligence on the P.D."

Mona was abused by Frank nearly everyday after they got married. It made Frank mad everytime Mona brought up money or his drug and alcohol intake, so he would beat her. "This isn't about you, Frank. I'm sure you could provide for your family if you didn't have to support so many damn drug dealers, bartenders, and whores too."
"I immediately regretted it, but before I could take back what I said, Frank was on me. His fist landed right under my chin and I landed on the dining room table. he pinned me there with a hand on my throat and punched me twice in the left eye with two quick, hard jabs."

Mona never felt like she fit in. When she was a gang member, she wasn't into doing drugs or other gang activities, this caused other gang members to be skeptical of her. When she worked at the Police station, she wasn't really trusted and was given looks, because of gang affiliation. " Listen, if it were up to me, I wouldn't allow you to work here. I dont think you're right for the job or this department. You belong out on the streets".

Mona was an outlier because she was a gang member who wanted to be a police officer, and a police officer who wanted to be a gang member. Some gang members knew about her working for the police, so they always questioned her. "Is that why you don't smoke dope? Are you a spy for the cops"

When Mona joined the police force she wasn't really accepted. It wasn't till officer Coberly was assigned to be here T.O. Coberly gave her a chance, and helped her. Coberly was the most respect Officer in the Santa Ana police, so when Mona won his acceptance, she won a lot of the others offices over as well. "He guided my hand as I drew up a mini- map with just the city's major streets, a small sheet I could study to get used to the grid system that had been so hard for me to nail down".
"The stamp of approval from The Godfather carried a lot of weight around the station. Probably more than any other single event, his blessing changed the way other cops viewed me, especially the old-timers."
