Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who was best known for the Montessori education method. She was often times known as "The woman that Revolutionized Education" because she developed what is now known as the "Montessori Method". This method is still something we use in today's generation. She believed that education should focus on the child and their social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development. Fun fact when I was a Sophomore in High School I was actually lucky enough to visit a Montessori School in Sioux Falls not knowing the connection.

The Montessori Method is an educational approach used for children, it involved hands-on and self directed learning. It was the idea of wanting children to learn through exploration and specially designed materials in a controlled environment. Often times the teachers would create different activities that would be in the students interests and have them learn like that. It focused on creating an independence, yet creative and loving learning environment. This approach in education allowed children to grow as human beings, giving them the chance to manage and control their own learning at their own pace. This method was developed while working with children with special needs, it focused on sensory learning and proved to be very effective among the special needs students.

As I mentioned before I was lucky enough to have been able to visit and tour a Montessori School here in Sioux Falls when I was a sophomore in high school, I had no connection and was definitely not educated on this topic then but its beautiful to still see her legacy live in our generation today. There are many Montessori Schools across America and even across the world. These schools are centered around her method and beliefs and constantly prove to be effective. Even schools that are not technically Montessori use principles from her methods in their classrooms, providing hands on activities, and fostering their students own independence. Her methods and beliefs are beautiful and I would love to incorporate some of it into my classroom one day.

Kids who learn within a Montessori school or with Montessori methods develop their own independence, self discipline, and a love for learning. Many times they even gain practical life skills, ability to problem solve themselves, and the ability to communicate and work well with others. While exploring a prepared environment they gradually become more independent and self directed, this allows them to grow as students while also developing some sort of ownership and love for learning. In todays generation we see parents providing a similar environment for their children at home, giving them that hands on activities to learn themselves. This encourages their independence and self sufficiency while also helping reinforce this learning and behavior in the classroom.

She developed her method by observing children's natural learning behaviors, wanting children to learn and grow not just mentally but socially, emotionally, and physically. She was also the first woman to qualify as a physician in Italy and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times. She designed her own furniture for children to use in her schools which at the name was an unknown concept. She trained more than 1,500 teachers with her methods. She was also a very strong advocate for women's rights and rights to education for everyone. Helen Keller was a dear friend of hers and would help her develop educational material.
