I find that theres not enough time provided for the discussion break out rooms. Then we are pulled in and asked to discuss what we talked about and its hard to do that.

I liked the one-on-one pairing for breakout rooms, it felt like we had more reason to speak because it was just us vs. a room with multiple people, because in some cases they have their camera off/don't speak.

I like the use of padlet and typing answers into the zoom chat rather than speaking up in front of the whole class. Also using polls could be helpful and continuing the use of breakout rooms.

Not necessarily having to always respond by talking. Being able to respond via comments can help those that don't want to speak in front of the class be able to still participate and be part of the discussion.

Camera on makes me feel awkward sometimes! I find I am less focused on content if I am distracted by my camera making me look weird, or wondering if its ok to eat/drink/or move around a little while on camera.

I would feel better if option a) we were given directions about what type of behavior/seating is allowed on camera, or b) if you would isolate a chunk out of the three hours when it's ok for people to be cameras off, so we can eat lunch and do some movements, etc.

i think if somebody doesnt feel comfortable sharing in the main zoom room that is fair but people should try to make an effort in breakout rooms as it hinders more than their own learning and if there is no discussion happening in the breakout rooms there isnt much point of them

I feel that the readings take up so much time outside of class that by the time we open for discussion in class, I’m burnt out of the material. 50-70 pages a week is A LOT

in breakout rooms, everyone should say at least one point they would like to contribute.

use a system of one point each and then if anyone has more to add they can. this gives everyone a fair chance to speak as there more shy students may not want to jump in when others are speaking

I do feel the class is extremely long and focusing can be hard to maintain. 10 min break is not enough for a 3 hour class.

Feeling overwhelmed, so much information to digest and comprehend. I struggle with some of the language used in the studies every week, so writing a piece each week is challenging, as it takes me a while to understand. I think the critical commentaries are a good idea, because sometimes I feel lost but reading my peers responses makes me feel like I am understanding what I am reading.

I feel like students should have to engage in this class. We are are final year students and should be able to speak on zoom. When students refuse to engage it dampens the learning experience for others

We collectively understand that (most) everyone has a fear of speaking up. We agree not to judge each other in this space of learning. We recognize the benefit of doing so for our learning and education, and to ultimately better our society.

I sometimes think the window for participation is a little too narrow. we are asked to offer 1-3 thoughts in between lecture steps. It feels a bit like nobody wants to be one of the people who takes one of the few spots to speak. I think if the discussion chunks were longer and had more time to build off of each other before moving on that would be helpful.

I find the readings too much and not knowing specifically what to say; sometimes i doubted if my understanding was right; would be easier for me with more specific readings and questions; one of the reasons i think as a student is lack of being initiative too

Briefly go over the direction of how you would like us to complete commentaries. It's quite daunting trying to ingest all the information and then cut it all down to 300 words.

We could maybe have a 5 minute chat about the topic each week, before the guest speaker starts, to answer any questions.

i lhave loved learning about US cultures and opinions but i think many of the topics have alot of application in NI eg dual identity irish/british/n.irish would be good to talk more about how they apply here too

I think sometimes the disscusion questions are too vague/too open/ and depend too much on us sharing personal insights. Most of as have never met, and this is an academic setting. Its awkward to start talking about our races, or sexualities, and lived experiences with people we don't know in big way yet.
