I want to express something more mature and more universally sympathetic, and although I create stories with children as the main characters, my audience is by no means only dealing with children, and I think children's receptiveness and aesthetic interests are much higher than we can imagine.

One day when I was a child, I saw three shadows under my feet on my way home, which I thought was amazing at the time because at that time I only knew that a person had only one shadow, but I didn't understand why I had three. I asked my mother and she ignored me. A lot of strange ideas came into my head, and I think that was when the imagination first started to sprout. There are a lot of things growing up that you can't explain yourself. Good things, bad things, always trying to find a reason for it, but mostly just brainstorming. I couldn't understand how Grandpa San could cook even though he was blind, so there was a little demon that helped him with his chores. Some realistic things become cute and reasonable in the eyes of a child. But children will always grow up, and when they do, they will know that the three shadows are nothing more than three light sources causing them. This is a story about memories of growing up and the changing times. The confusion of childhood gives room for imagination to arise, which in turn is rooted in the environment in which one grows up. Everything is slowly changing, growing up and the countryside changing, and many things are leaving us like the extra shadows and the gods in the small temple.

The fear disappears, but Xiao Man's beautiful imagination disappears at the same time, and the big treasure boat disappears, and his childhood is over ....

INSPRATION

The inspiration for this project came from an experience I had as a child living in the countryside.
My cousin caught a sparrow for me to cheer me up, but as a child I did not have the ability to empathise with other creatures and I treated the sparrow as a plaything, and it eventually died in my play. Growing up I understood the meaning of life and regretted my previous actions, but I could never get that sparrow's life back. When we were children we saw the world as a place of fun and adventure and we tried many new things out of curiosity and naivety. But when we grow up and stop looking back at what we did as children through the filter of our childhood, we are surprised to find that those childhood adventures were actually grey, even cruel, and that we unconsciously harmed many creatures in the process.

THE CROWD

Depending on what excites the group, the various impulses they obey can be brash or cruel, courageous or cowardly, but they are always so strong that personal interest, even the interest of preserving life, can hardly control them.

The few psychologists who have studied groups, looking at the criminal behaviour of groups, and having seen how often these acts occur, have come to the conclusion that the moral level of groups is, at times, very low.
For we have inherited from primitive times the savage and destructive instinct which lies dormant in each one of us. It is dangerous for the isolated individual to satisfy this instinct in life, but when he joins an irresponsible group, knowing full well that he will not be punished, he indulges this instinct completely. In life, we cannot take out this destructive instinct on our fellow man, so we take it out on the animals. The passion and ferocity with which the group hunts has the same root. The group slowly kills its defenceless victims, displaying a very cowardly cruelty. But this cruelty, in the philosopher's view, is very closely related to the cruelty shown when dozens of hunters gather in packs to hunt and kill an unfortunate deer with hounds.

This story is about a small dog, a large dog and a cat who find a lost and crying child while playing in the forest. At first they approach the child cautiously, and when they find that the child is not threatening or malicious, they try to calm him down. Until the child finally stopped crying and started laughing.
Fascinated by the child's laughter, the animals began to tickle the child and play with him in the hope of making him laugh more.
But gradually their playfulness began to get out of hand and their patience waned. They found that the screams and cries of the child were more exciting than the laughter. When the child tries to get up they push him down and when he tries to run away they catch him back like a prey. Gradually the child became weaker and weaker, unable to fight back or make any more noise. The animals throw the child into the water in the hope that this will stimulate the child to continue playing with them. When the child fell into the water he immediately began to flutter and shout for help, the animals were pleased with his reaction, but soon the child had no more strength to struggle and floated silently on the surface of the water without any movement. The animals too, tired of this cruel game, left the boy in the water and departed.
But at the end of the story there is a change of perspective and it is all actually the dying fantasy of a puppy tormented by the children. I wanted to tell the story from the first-person perspective of the animal.

The RSPCA is the UK's largest animal welfare charity and in 2020 the RSPCA investigated and rescued over 57,000 animal cruelty cases. The RSPCA is concerned about the attitudes and behaviours of young people towards animals and this fits in with my project, so I chose to situated in this community.

Through my personal experience and research, the results of the questionnaire have shown that child abuse of animals is in fact very common. Through my work, I hope to aim to reveal the seriousness of child cruelty to animals. To draw public attention and concern to this issue. Through this project, I hope to convey an important message to people that children need to be concerned about the welfare and needs of animals in their interactions with them, rather than focusing only on their own pleasure and excitement.
Everyone's experiences and backgrounds are different and there may be other reasons for this animal abuse. In any case, it is important to develop empathy, responsibility and moral awareness in educating and guiding children to understand the importance of respecting and protecting life.

For this project I wanted to use mixed media hand-painting as a creative form. I thought that the rough texture of hand painting and the clash of various materials would suit my storytelling style.
I have experimented with acrylics, gouache, watercolour, charcoal, glue and other combinations of media in the experimental phase, trying to create a wild and free style and texture.
In terms of paper choice, I am still experimenting with different grammages, textures and materials, trying to find papers that can render several materials well as my original paper.

Reflection on the research phase

During the research phase, I didn't have a clear definition of community and thought that people with the same experiences might be considered a community, which led me to be very confused about what my original intention was in creating my work based on this community and who the audience was.
However, after talking to my mentor I realised what community actually meant, so I looked back at my creative aims and searched for community again and eventually found the RSPCA, a charity that has a charity that fits in with my creative aims, the RSPCA does charity work on preventing or improving animal cruelty in children and young people, such as education courses, training responsible classes for animals etc. fostering responsible classes for animals, etc. My work aims to expose the fact that children are abusing animals to the audience and hopefully through my work they will realise that we need to be more responsible and caring towards other creatures.

I was surprised to find that in every case of animal cruelty by children, the parents of the children always downplayed the seriousness of the matter on the grounds that the children were just playing around and did not know any better, and did not educate the children afterwards.

The biggest challenge I encountered in the middle of creating this picture book was the writing of the picture book story. It was a huge challenge for me to tell the story from a different and unusual narrative perspective, how to tell the story clearly, and whether the audience would understand the core of the story in the first place.
I also had to think about whether the story was dark, whether my audience would accept this style of storytelling, or whether the plot of the story would go against some universal ethics.
I wanted to avoid the story falling into clichés, but my own literary skills were not strong enough. So I sought help from a friend in the literature department and got the comment that as a reader at first glance at my story I thought it might be a story about school violence. But after I had described the picture to him he was able to understand the story, so I needed to consider how closely my words connected to my picture.

Characterisation

My story is not only intended to be a reaction to the abuse of animals by children, but also to create three characters with different personalities through the plot to metaphorize a real-life, real-life incident in which a vicious event takes place with several real people. The big dog in the story is the instigator of the victimisation of the little girl, and instead of acting as a moral role model for the group, he acts as the leader of the group, encouraging the weaker and weaker members of the group to do bad things. The narrator, Puppy, as the instigated perpetrator, is a true reflection of me as a child. He understands that he is in a group where he is not responsible for his own actions, and so at the end of the story he indulges his 'evil' instincts. The white cat is a bystander throughout, perhaps symbolic of the many of us who choose to remain silent when we see animal cruelty happening, or who simply don't realise what a terrible thing it is.

Our Position:

The online project ‘Care for the land we live in’ is a collective exploration of fourteen young female creative practitioners together to understand our relationship with nature.

In the collective project, we started to recognise the relationship with nature through an eco-feminism perspective. From the ecofeminist point of view, women’s oppression under patriarchy is closely linked to the oppression and domination of nature under capitalist, colonial, and modernist forces. We look at human activities towards nature from a feminist perspective that opposes oppression in the above context. We advocate relying on and embracing nature through an environmental philosophy of symbiosis with nature.

‘Refusing hierarchical, dualistic, and instrumental relationships, when acting responsibly, does not stem from a restraining moral dogma. It is rather a path to live fully, to thrive as humans celebrating our place in the more-than-human world (Kimmerer, Citation2014, cited in Moriggi et al., 2020).’

After talking to my fellow tutors I had some new ideas about how my work should be presented and who it should reach, and this idea was actually in line with the direction of my original project.

I was initially inspired by Brecht evens' graphic novel Panther, which appears to be a story about a child and an animal with gorgeous, bright images, but when we immerse ourselves in the book we find that the story is actually bizarre and dark. The end of the story may reveal a dark truth about the tragic incestuous relationship between the girl and her father, but the author doesn't tell the story from the point of view of an educator or a critic; he cleverly uses fictional narratives to convey the story subtly.

I think my story is more suitable for adults or older teenagers with a certain receptiveness to darkness. And I would tell the story from a writer's point of view rather than an educator's, focusing on creating a more purely fictional story with a focus on the plot and the atmosphere of the story.

I'm not trying to say that children hurt animals, but I'm using the subject matter to say that naivety is the greatest evil, that the darkest secret of our species is that we all cause harm to some creature, even if we don't actively participate in it, or if we don't even realize it's a harm.

My final project will be in the form of an illustrated book, and as I have chosen to create my original manuscripts in a hand-drawn format, I wanted to show as much detail of my manuscripts as possible in the exhibition.

I only had one wall to display my work on, and initially envisioned 3-4 originals, dummie books, and ceramics. However, in the end, I abandoned the ceramics in order to make it clear to the viewer what form my work would ultimately take.

In the process of scanning the original I found that the phosphor I had used in the image could not be displayed, but I couldn't give up the phosphor as an important colour for the grotesqueness of my storytelling style. So I finally decided to show the original.

During the mid-term exhibition, I also joined the shop team for planning and sales, which was a great experience. During the process, I not only learnt how other illustrators commercialise their illustrations, but also saw a lot of creative illustration products and the possibilities of illustration, and also learned what kind of illustrations are the most popular among the general public during the sales process; after all, sales are the most intuitive way to show what today's audience prefers, and market analysis is an indispensable part of an illustrator's job.

After finalising the outline of the story, I worked on the composition and character design. In order to emphasise the natural wildness of the world, I didn't opt for complex scene composition and exquisite characterisation. I used a central composition for a large part of the story. By placing the key plot points or characters in the centre, it is easier for readers to understand the main message of the story and less likely to miss important details. Highlighting the characters' facial expressions and emotions helps readers better understand and empathise with the characters' emotions in the story and increases the impact of the image. For the character design, I exaggerated the difference in size between the big dog and the other characters to emphasise its sense of oppression, as for the little girl I did not design a fixed outfit for her when I drew her, and you can see that her clothing is changing in every picture, this is to present a feeling of seeming to be in a dream world, where it seems that an accurate image of the character can never be captured, and also to hint at the twist in the end.

We ended up organising the book fair at Millbank Tower and it was a great success, thanks to the dedication of all the group members involved in setting up the exhibition. The exhibition was very well attended, with a large number of visitors, mostly art practitioners or students, who exchanged ideas about their creative journeys and received a lot of good feedback and advice.

This book fair is not only the final exhibition of my course, but also an opportunity to explore my future work as an illustrator, how to produce a book, how to market my book, how to participate in book fairs to increase my influence, etc. I have gained a lot of affirmation from the audience at the book fair, and I have also got a number of business opportunities.
