Today we explored what animals including humans need to survive. We discussed the absolute essentials before discuss what we need to stay healthy and be able to thrive.

WALT: Understand the importance of washing our hands well.

Today we conducted a scientific experiment and absolutely LOVED it!

Following a review of the KO and vocabulary widgets we spoke about why it is so important to have good hand hygiene.

Before we introduced the 'germs' (glitter) to our hands, we predicted which method would clean our hands best - washing WITH soap or washing WITHOUT soap. As you can see, it was a unanimous agreement. Once we'd conducted the experiment, we came back together to share our results and conclusions...USE SOAP TO CLEAR AWAY GERMS!

Today we explored the types of food a human needs to be healthy. Following a class discussion we sorted a range of foods into a 'eat lots of' or 'eat less of' piles.

2/12/25 STEM workshop: Festive farming

Today we took part in a workshop that helped us to review lots of our knowledge. We reviewed what plants need in order to grow and survive, as well as what animals need to be able to survive. We compared and contrasted different plants and animals and learned about the different types of farmers that help produce vegetables, Christmas trees and who look after animals.

9.1.26 GFOL workshop: investigating materials

Today we had a challenge were we had to choose only two materials to create a new bakery for Thomas Farrinor. We discussed how our roof’s needed to be waterproof and our walls needed to be strong. We discussed the properties of our chosen materials. To make it fair we squirted 2 pumps of water over our creations, however we weren’t successful in making them waterproof. This led us to evaluate why and what we could do next time.

Today we explored outside and found the main materials used: metal, wood, plastic, tarmac, brick and glass. We discussed that, because they’re outdoor materials, they needed to be strong and durable and resist the weather. Children were able to name these materials. We also had the opportunity to discuss ‘reflection’ due to the shining sun. Children noticed that the plastic, wet floor and the puddles all reflected.

Todays lesson focused on where natural materials come from and how more harmful materials, such as plastic are made. Children began to understand that making certain materials uses up energy, water and fuels and can produce pollution. Children recognised that mining can damage the Earth and that should we use trees for wood, we should then replant to ensure more trees are produced.

Today we investigated materials that stretched and discussed why certain materials need to stretch, we linked this back to suitable and unsuitable. Children recognised that certain materials stretch and some don’t, resulting in tearing or changed shape.

The second part of our lesson linked to stretchy materials with a focus of changing the shape of our material. We discussed vocabulary such as: roll, bend, twist, stretch, flatten, squash. We even discussed properties such as soft, bumpy, smooth, malleable.

6.02.26 Investigate different surfaces

Today we investigated different surfaces and described how they felt when a toy drove over them. We talked about suitable and unsuitable and discussed and recorded our observations in our book. We linked our learning back to John McAdam (the inventor of the road) and how the new invention of ‘tar’ and John McAdam’s name are linked, giving us ‘tarmac’.

Today we learnt about the different roles of engineers. We looked at, planned and tried to build different bridges. We had to use our teamwork skills and lots of trial and error to make our bridges stable and secure.
