On page 122, “Yes,but why would you want to?” The Fury mocked Gretel for being able to speak French because he thinks that German is the most important language and other languages are irrelevant. Also, “turned round and walked directly into the dining room and promptly sat down at the head of the table-in Father’s seat!” This shows that the Fury was very rude and had no manners as he did not ask for permission to sit down at the head of the table. He was the guest but yet he acted like he was the biggest in the house. Therefore,my impression of the Fury is that he is very rude and had no manners.

In line 6-7 of page 122, Gretel says that she is able to speak french and the Fury replied to her statement with " 'Yes, but why would you want to?' ". This shows how the Fury mocked Gretel for being able to speak French as he thought that it was useless since German was more important.

In page 122, the Fury had shouted for Eva from another room. She ignored him and merely rolled her eyes. In page 123, “ ‘Eva!’ Roared the Fury for a second time, and now she started to walk away from them.” Even though the Fury had yelled for Eva twice, she didn’t react and stayed calm and composed. This is common behaviour for couples of being tolerant of each other. In page 124, “ the Fury did not open the door for his companion but instead climbed in and started reading a newspaper, while she said goodbye once again to Mother and thanked her for the lovely dinner” this shows that Eva did not mind the Fury’s curtness and decided to thank Mother on behalf of him.

2. Describe the Fury's relationship with Eva.
The relationship between the Fury and Eva is a loveless relationship. For example, on page 122, " 'Eva,' shouted the Fury from the other room, clicking his fingers as if she were some sort of puppy dog. The woman rolled her eyes and stood up slowly and turned round." This shows that the Fury does not treat Eva lovingly, like how a husband would do to his wife. The Fury treats Eva merely like how an owner would treat a puppy dog, commanding and controlling the puppy dog's behavior. Another example that shows that the Fury has a loveless relationship with Eva is on page 124, "... the Fury did not open the door for his companion but instead climbed in and started reading a newspaper, while she said goodbye once again to Mother and thanked her for the lovely dinner." This shows that the Fury does not show any love to Eva. He does not even open the car door for Eva to get in, something that a gentleman would do to show good manners to a lady. Hence, the Fury and Eva has a loveless relationship.

There are similarities in Bruno's description of the Fury here and historical accounts of him, as he was known to have many ailments and illnesses, "prescribed 90 medications during the time of the war". It has been recorded that 🤬 stood at a height of 1.75 metres, which could be considered below average when compared to the average height of a German man (1.79 metres).

1. Identify the differences between Bruno and Shmuel's living conditions.
Bruno leads a very sheltered and privileged life whereas Shmuel leads a dreary and lonely life. In the novel, when Bruno brings up the topic of playtime, Shmuel shares how there is no playtime behind the fence. This can be seen from page 131, which says, “ ‘We don’t play,’ said Shmuel. ‘Don’t play? Why ever not?’ ‘Why would we play?’ he asked, his face confused at the idea of it.’ “ This means Bruno is used to playing with other children freely, which soon became part of his lifestyle. In contrast, Shmuel does not have the same freedom to partake in activities he enjoys due to the strict rules in the concentration camp. Shmuel is a character foil to Bruno, bringing out his oblivion to the realities of the concentration camp and has sheltered lifestyle. When Bruno invites Shmuel for dinner one of the days, he is still oblivious to the fact that meeting Shmuel was strictly not allowed. This can be seen from page 132 of the novel, which states, “

1. What is Shmuel’s view of Nazi soldiers? How is it different from Bruno’s view of them?

Shmuel views all the Nazi soldiers as nasty and cruel. For example, Shmuel said, “there aren’t any good soldiers“ (pg 140) and repeated the same thing a second time. The repetition used here suggests that Shmuel strongly believes that no soldiers are compassionate. He thinks all soldiers are inhumane as he has only experienced cruelty from the soldiers. Shmuel also thinks the Nazi soldiers are brutal as “the soldiers don’t normally like people getting better (...) it usually works the other way round” (pg 139) the irony used here suggests that the soldiers were ruthless as one would expect soldiers to protect and aid people in getting better. However, one’s expectation is reversed as Shmuel described the soldiers as heartless because they rather see people getting hurt and suffering than them recovering. This shows that all the soldiers he has met had never treated his kind (the Jews) sympathetically. Hence, Shmuel views the Nazi soldiers as cruel and unkind.

In contrast to Shmuel’s view of the soldiers, Bruno views some of the soldiers as good natured and looks up to them. For example, when Shmuel said, “There aren’t any good soldiers” , (pg 140) Bruno disagreed and said, “Of course there are (...) Well, Father, for one” (pg 140) And when Shmuel once again said that there wasn’t any good soldiers, Bruno again opposed and said, “Except Father,” (pg 140) This shows that Bruno is fully convinced that Father was a good soldier and wanted to defended for him. He also looks up to him because he said, “ ‘I’m going to be a soldier,’ said Bruno in a determined voice. ‘Like Father.’” (pg 139) The tone used here suggests that he has already got his mind set on him being a soldier as he thinks soldiers are kind and loving. Bruno has never experienced explicitly cruel treatment from a soldier and Father has shown tenderness to him and his family. Additionally, Father also “has such an impressive uniform” and “everyone calls him Commandant and does whatever he says” (pg 140) All these positive traits made Bruno think his Father is a good soldier and hence wanted to be just like him. Thus, Bruno views are different from as he views the soldiers as affable whereas Shmuel views the soldiers as barbaric.

How is it different from Bruno’s view of them?

Shmuel thinks that the nazi soldiers are cruel people who mistreat others where as Bruno thinks that they are nice people who do good for others. this can be seen from the passage, which states, "'i'm going to be a soldier,' said bruno in a determined voice. 'like father.'" here, we can see how bruno thinks that his father is doing good for everyone, and takes him as a role model, even wanting to be 'just like him'. this can also be seen from the passage, which states," ' that's why why he has such an impressive uniform and why everyone calls him commandant and does whatever he says. the fury has big things in mind for him because he's such a good soldier.' " this also shows how much bruno respects his father and his job. he thinks the father is respected by everyone because he is a good soldier who helps others. The passage stated '"There aren't any good soldiers' said shmuel" this shows that Shmuel has a bad impression of them and he think of them as bad people instead of people who are protecting their country.

2. Why is it that these two boys have such differing views of the Nazi soldiers?

The reason as to why is due to the difference in their upbringing. Bruno is raised by a Nazi soldier, so he is most likely to be influenced by his father's views on being part of Nazi. Moreover, Bruno also looks up to his father, which makes him more inclined to follow the things his father says and does. In page 139, when Bruno and Shmuel were talking to each other, Bruno said, "I'm going to become a soldier [...] like Father" The word 'want' suggests Bruno's genuine desire to become a Nazi Soldier, which shows how he has conformed to the Nazi Regime and even wants to be part of it. The words 'like Father' also imply that Bruno wishes be like his father, which is the reason why Bruno looks up to his father. Bruno has been so influenced by the people around him, like his father, such that he also views Nazi Soldiers in a positive light.
in contrast to how bruno was raised, shmuel was actually captured and confined by nazi soldiers just like bruno's father. we can see that how shmuel has been brought up was highly different as jews were despised by the german nazi soldiers. in page 139, when having a conversation with bruno on their preferences, shmuel repeatedly mentions, 'there aren't any good soldiers,' no matter how much bruno protests. on the other side of the fence, shmuel has been exposed to the dangers of the concentration camp, which was ran by nazi soldiers. After being tortured and treated unfairly, there is no doubt that shmuel would feel terrified of the soldiers. therefore, the two boys having seen different lights of the nazi soldiers, will drastically contrast in opinions of the nazi soldiers.

2. Why is it that these two boys have such differing views of the Nazi soldiers?
The two boys have such differing views of the Nazi soldiers because of the contrasting environments they are living in. The repetition of Shmuel saying, “‘There aren’t any good soldiers,’” shows his insistence that all soldiers are bad people. This may be the result of his first-hand experience of the soldiers doing their job of treating him and the other prisoners who live in the concentration camp cruelly. In contrary, Bruno replies to Shmuel saying there were not any good soldiers with, “Except Father,’”. A probable reason is that even though Bruno’s father is a soldier, he treats Bruno less harshly than how soldiers treat the prisoners at the concentration camp because Bruno is, after all, his flesh-and-blood son. At home, Father is entitled to merely act like a father and not a soldier so Bruno never sees father actually treating people like soldiers do.

The two boys have differing views of the Nazi soldiers due to their knowledge about them.

For Bruno, due to the fact that his parents do not tell him about what happens during the Holocaust, he is oblivious to what is happening around him. On page 139 it states, “ ‘Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?’ he asked./ ‘Yes,’ said Shmuel. ‘I want to work in a zoo.’/ ‘A zoo?’ asked Bruno./ ‘I like animals,’ said Shmuel quietly./ ‘I’m going to be a soldier,’ said Bruno in a determined voice. ‘Like Father.’/ ‘I wouldn’t like to be a soldier,’ said Shmuel.” The tone used in Bruno insistence in “in a determined voice” to be like his father shows how much he appreciates Nazi soldiers based on what he sees from is point from view, without knowing about the truth of them. Shmuel however, disagrees with what Bruno thinks due to having more knowledge about what happens in the concentration camp where Jews are killed everyday, he feels that they are evil and cruel people who he should not be associated with. Without having the knowledge about the war, Bruno thinks highly of his father being a commandant when he does not know what is happening behind the scene. Hence, the two boys have differing views of the Nazi soldiers due to their knowledge about them.

On page 144, the author mentioned " Although my father was a professor of literature at the university, I preferred social science to arts." This shows that they preferred different things causing them to have different livings which led to their distant relationship. "He left Germany some years ago. Nineteen thirty-eight, I think it was. I haven't seen him since then." This shows that his father abandoned :( Liettenant Kotler in Germany and hasn't kept in touch with home since he left. This shows that their relationship was not good😣 until that the father didnt even bother to keep in touch with him after he left. This was probably because of their differing likings. Lieutenant Kotler was dedicated to the Nazi while his father was not interested. His father probably despised the fact that his son was participating in the Nazi army 😡 which probably led to an enstranged relationship.😊

4. What do you think Lieutenant Kotler did to Pavel at the end of the chapter? What do you feel about it?
I think that Lieutenant Kotler violently tortured Pavel due to his anger. The novel states, "What happened then was both unexpected and extremely unpleasant". This suggests that physical violence was involved. He might have been extra harsh towards Pavel to hide his embarrassment after talking about his relationship with his father, or so that the others would not pity him.

4. What do you think Lieutenant Kotler did to Pavel at the end of the chapter? What do you feel about it?

I think that Lieutenant Kolter mercilessly beat Pavel up. Based on the passage given, it can be seen from Chapter 13 that what Lieutenant Kolter did "made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale" This shows that the sight of the way Pavel was treated by LK was very unpleasant and unbearable to watch. His behaviour can also be seen from Chapter 15 where Bruno saw LK "shooting a dog and the evening when Pavel had made him so angry that he-" This tells me that when Bruno saw LK shooting the dog, it had reminded him of the incident when LK was punishing Pavel, indicating that the scene was very unpleasant. I feel very bad for Pavel as everyone makes mistakes and should be given a second chance but he couldn't get of those privileges.

What do you feel about it?

I think that Lieutenant Kotler (LK) assaulted Pavel at the end of the chapter. The novel states, “...even though none of them could watch.” This signifies that what LK did to Pavel was so despicable that no one could bear to watch. The novel also states that, “it made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale.” This tells us that LK’s actions towards Pavel were so violent that it made Bruno so traumatised that he teared up. If LK had simply scolded Pavel, Bruno would not have started crying out of fear.

4. What do you think Lieutenant Kotler did to Pavel at the end of the chapter? What do you feel about it?

I think Lieutenant Kotler tortured Pavel at the end of the chapter. The novel states, “Even though it made Bruno cry and Gretel grow pale.” This shows that he tortured Pavel in private to protect the children’s innocence. The novel also states, “Lieutenant Kotler grew very angry with Pavel and no one — not Bruno, not Gretel, not Mother and not even Father — stepped in to stop him doing what he did next, even though none of them could watch.” The author uses hyperbole as a form of diction to exaggerate the actions of Lieutenant Kotler against Pavel, by using the words “none of them could watch.” This exaggerates Lieutenant Kotler’s actions as it was as if the actions of Lieutenant Kotler would stick into minds of the people witnessing what he had did to Pavel, which will haunt them forever. This shows that Lieutenant Kotler was very mad at Pavel and did something that was very brutal to him, until the point where no one wanted to look, or even know what Lieutenant Kotler was doing to Pavel. Hence, I feel that Lieutenant Kotler is a very cruel person and he would hurt anyone without hesitation.

Lieutenant Kotler's personality is vulgar due to his sour relationship with his father as his father had abandoned him to go to Switzerland 🇨🇭before the war. This can be seen, " Lieutenant Kotler ordering Pavel to hep Bruno, " 'Hey you! he shouted, then adding a word that Bruno did not understand. 'Come over here, you _____' " and " 'Afterwards, when you return to the kitchen, make sure you wash your hands before touching any of the food, you filthy _______' " (Chapter 70 pg 76). From this, we are able to tell that Lieutenant Kotler is vulgar as he used a cursed word in front of Bruno not once, but twice, which we feel that is because Lieutenant Kotler wanted to exert dominance on other people as he had experienced abandonment as his father had left him when he was younger, hence, making him extremely mean and a person who like to put others down to make himself look stronger than others so that people will respect and fear him and not betray him like his father did to hime when he was younger.
