Why Do Violations Occur?

Many do not even realize that they are committing the violations of the commandments of computer ethics. For example there or many websites that offer free copyrighted content, though not realize that it breaks the ethical code. Therefore the issue is that there is a lack of awareness on the subject. There is also a lot of pressure in schools and at the workplace to meet certain expectations, therefore one may be inclined to take unethical shortcuts to fulfill those expectations.

Of the Ten commandments, I believe that the one students violate the most is Commandment 6, Thou shalt not copy software for which you have not paid. There are various website that offer free trials, in which students use various email addresses to access multiple times. Students are overwhelmed with the financial burden and workload of collage, which leads them to violate the commandment.

How to Reduce or Eliminate Unethical Behavior

To reduce behaviors of unethical computer use, awareness of the commandments should be implemented. Websites should include the the ethical computing guidelines prior to allowing one to access the site. There should also be a pamphlet handed out with every purchase of a computer to raise awareness.
