I'm studying Social Movements through Organizational & Religious Studies, and migration and minoritization are extremely bound up with race and ethnicity as well as religion (e.g. many Muslim immigrants here). I'm mixed and third-generation on Mom's side (Chinese), so I'm interested in contextualizing that heritage and also learning more about differences between the experience of immigrants here vs. the U.S. I hope this class will give a chance to engage critically with nationalism and xenophobia (esp. in a very homogenous state) and offer me frameworks for doing so that I can apply at home.

What I want to achieve in my life

Big question! I don't know about a career path, but I want to center community relationships in my life and honor what they call me to do, i.e. act in ethical ways. For the past bit, that's meant moving away from tech, which I worked in before coming to college, and towards work esp. with Asian-American and queer community. I want to keep questioning, stay open to a lot of joy, and live by similar principles as people I admire. Vague? Possibly, but life is big!

I am a sociology major and government minor, and in many of the courses I have taken, Nordic countries have been touted as being a model for egalitarian cultures and welfare states. Critiques of this idea were often only brief in-class discussion, so this course caught my eye as being a place to expand on those discussions. My core course (Cultural Diversity and Integration) and will also pair well with this class, and I am hoping to connect what I learn from both. I am also very interested in cultural sociology and ideas of place and community, so I saw this course as a good place to learn more.

Im not entirely sure of what I would like to do with my sociology major. I hope to work for an NGO doing some type of social work at some point in my life, and possibly work at a think tank or become a professor. I hope that whatever I do puts me in a position to have some type of positive impact on the communities and the people around me.

My learning objectives for this semester are to (as I said) put this course in conversation with my core course, and to overall become more aware of the more marginalized experiences of people who live in Denmark. A specific topic that I would like to learn more about or at least create context for is the "parallel societies" legislation, and how that has impacted immigrant's ability to form communities here.

I am very interested in the differences between Denmark and America, and interested in this specific topic about due to the large divide and discrepancies in American culture. I am excited to learn about danish communities and peoples roles and feeling in them.

In my broader life I want to graduate college, go to PA school, and live in small town as a doctor far away from the real world. Before PA school I would like to travel more and enjoy my life outside of class. Pretty much I just want to be happy in whatever I am doing.

At the end of this course, I would like to be able to use my knowledge about danish society and identity to better understand and appreciate my time here.

So often Americans are told that they would be living better lives if they moved to Europe but that’s not always the case for POC. Getting a deeper understanding of this is also one of my main learning objectives.

I decided to take this course because I am interested in how Denmark functions in comparison to what I know in my daily life as a US native. I also have taken many academic courses in my academic journey so far that center around minority groups and furthering my knowledge on this subject is something that I'm hoping to gain from this class.

Career-wise, I am hoping to pursue Event Planning and be able to own my own Special Events business. Currently, I am looking forward to my upcoming summer internship as an Event Specialist and can't wait to see where that takes me! However, in general I am looking to live each day to the fullest by spending time with friends and family and meeting new people along the way.

After this course is done, I am hoping that I can use my new knowledge to educate the people that I know back at home about the different types of minority groups, disparities, and reasons for migration within Denmark so that they too can better understand the lifestyle and culture here!

This past semester, I had the amazing opportunity to be a legal intern at the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants and that experience (especially the people that I was lucky enough to meet and work with) inspired me to take this class.

I decided to take this course for similar reasons to why I am studying Religion, English, and Sociology/ Anthropology which is because I will be able to take what I learn and apply it to larger parts of society and the world. I think it will be super interesting to see how policies and ideas surrounding immigration and minorities in Denmark differ from those and the US and what those ideas look like in this culture.

I'm not yet sure what I want to do with my education or life, I think teaching at some point could be valuable to help create a more socially aware culture in spaces I exist in, though I am not sure if teaching is my end goal!

I hope to come away from this class with a greater awareness and new perspectives on this topic!
