Marji: “I knew everything about the children of Palestine. About Fidel Castro. About the young Vietnamese killed by the Americans” (Satrapi 12). 
This quote is from the beginning of the book when Marji is very young. She has very recently begn learning about the Revolution and is already captivated by it. She even says, "I knew everything," implying that she has spent a lot of time thinking about it. This explains how Marji strived to be well informed and understand as much as she could about what was happening around her. About what the scarring violence around her meant and who it affected. The traumatic time caused her to get confused because of how young she was and in turn want to know as much as possible so she could form her own ideas and stop being so bewildered. Marji's Parents: "Where?" 
Marji: "To demonstrate on the street! I am sick and tired of doing it in the garden.” (Satrapi 16). 
Here, Marji has stormed into her parents bedroom, as forcefully as a young child can, to inform them that she wants nothing more than to accompany them to the heart of the Revolution. This quote proves how Marji is outspoken and wants to make her voice heard and participate in the protests. It also shows how her parents did not want her to be a part of those traumatic things  due to her age and yet she still wants to. The revolution has affected what she wants and what she wants to do.  It also includes how she has grown "sick and tired of doing it in the garden" (16). Marji: “You stop! They were Guardians of the Revolution, the women’s branch. This group had been added in 1982 to arrest women who were improperly veiled. (Like me, for example.)” (Satrapi 132). 
Right before this quote Marji's parents have just returned from a trip and have brought her numerous, illegal items. This shows how Marji was a risk taker and how she did things, such as going out alone dressed inappropriately, that could get her detained or punished by a group that had been added "to arrest women who were improperly veiled" (132). Because she was growing up during this time she threw caution to the wind more so than an adult would when facing similar circumstances. How risky she chooses to be is really showcased because she does things contrary to the way they are supposed to be done in her very restrictive society. Though she had grown older, Marji was still considered young when this occurred. Laly: "On a trip."
Marji: "Don’t you know that when they keep saying someone is on a trip it really means he is dead?” (Satrapi 48). 
Here, Marji is talking to her acquaintance, Laly, at a time when they are both significantly young. Marji didn’t think twice about sharing information like that with a girl she was talking to. She flat out says, "it really means he is dead" (48). That is a brash but honest thing to ask the girl but because Marji is young and has grown up in circumstances that are brash and often brutally honest she has no qualms about acting that way. Young children tend to absorb and sort of become what they are used to and spend time around. Marji: "That incident made my mother sick for several days. Anything I can get you mom?"
Marji's Mother: "..." (Satrapi 74). 
In this last quote Marji and her father have just picked up their mother who was alone when she was suddenly harassed. This proves that Marji was too young for the issues she encountered but was mature enough to handle them and move past them. She also doesn't just exist in the storm of hatred around her, she tries to help others. Like when she asks, "anything I can get you mom?" (74). The Islamic Revolution caused an abundance of violence, anger and aggression and because Marji was young during that time she had to grow up prematurely and learn how to function while such bad things were happening around her. It is made with relatively simple drawings and a palette of black and white. It is not arranged chronologically. It is mainly Marji's autobiography with history and facts about the Islamic Revolution added in to increase a reader's understanding of the situation while also showing her story specifically. The book is broken up into littler stories about individual events or times in her life.
Meets- This organization of the book impacts the author’s central idea by really highlighting how young Marji is and providing detail about how horrible and violent the events surrounding her were. The fact that the story is told out of order is because Marji writes those pieces of history when she hears of them, as stories from people older than her. This really points out just how young and uninformed Marji is because she doesn’t really know much at first and tries to find everything out through these stories. The pictures and the fact that it’s a graphic novel make the aggression and the whole Islamic Revolution in general seem more dramatic and palpably terrible. The book is most likely broken into smaller stories about particular events because doing so helps the flow of the story. By separating each specific part of the story it makes it more understandable and emphasizes parts of her life that she wants you to remember. The parts that reveal the central idea. Such as the section, titled Kim Wilde, in which she explains how she asked her parents to bring her posters across the border. This is a very risky move but she just wants posters of her favorite singers because she is young, 12 at this time, and doesn't really consider the possible consequences. The revolution has instilled a sort of defiance and bold edge in her that allows her to think like that.
