What is the group’s history and their mission?

Ever since the Order was formed over 80 years ago, its mission was to create a pure bloodline. They believe it is the word of God to do this. Charles W. Kingston built this compound in Utah for this new sector of Mormonism could grow, and his relative Paul Elden Kingston is now the prophet. The population of the Order has significantly grown because of their polygamist views, having multiple wives and many many children. Children are taught in church and in school about the bloodline and their duty to God to get married.

A common thread throughout Mormonism is polygamy. The Order of the Kingston Clan says it is their duty to keep a pure bloodline, making incest another thing the Order is notorious for. Decades of inbreeding has caused birth defects in the Order from blindness to missing fingernails to stillborns and miscarriages.

The Order is also known for its white supremacist views. Part of keeping a pure bloodline is not only incest but also to never associate with a person of color, or someone who practices a different religion.

The Order of the Kingston Clan is an example of group think because they are so isolated from the rest of the world. Physically the compound is located in a remote part of Utah, the media is censored so thoroughly that members of The Order are completely cut off from the world, and the education curriculum consists of lessons on religion.

The Order controls roughly 100 businesses in the Western United States from casinos to factories to cattle ranches. The children in the cult are used essentially as slaves, doing unpaid work for the conglomerate. The girls, many of them teen brides, answer phones at the Order’s law office, bag groceries at its supermarket or tend to the clan’s many children. Boys work its coal mine and stack boxes at Standard Restaurant Supply, a massive discount store. They are paid not in cash but in scrip, a form of credit used by the Mormon pioneers that can only be redeemed at company stores.

What factors led to the cohesiveness of the group?

One of the factors that led to The Order's cohesiveness is their same views and knowledge because of their forced ignorance. The lack of connection to the outside world caused by censorship and indoctrination has made the group all think the same way. Another factor is the size of the Kingston Clan's population. Because so many people believe the same things and work without thinking twice, the rest of the group follows suit and doesn't question it.

Because of the censorship within the Order, Prophet Paul Elden Kingston has the power to allow the compound to know whatever he wants them to, or not know whatever he wants them to. Because of this, he holds a great amount of power and is the person the compound goes to for information. The members of The Order do as their told and don't question the Prophet because they know nothing else, and they have been indoctrinated to be afraid of not following the Prophet.

How does the bystander problem play out in each cult or how could it play out in a hypothetical situation?

It's difficult to tell exactly how the bystander effect plays out in this situation because the Order encourages their members to not interact with the outside world nearly at all. Because of this, it's difficult from the outside to tell whether or not someone is a member of the cult. That said, a hypothetical situation in which the bystander effect would come into play is if somebody did nothing about the group because they assumed somebody else would have it handled.

How is The Order similar or different from the FDLS church in Prophet's Prey related to groupthink and obedience to authority?

There are many similarities to the FDLS church and the Kingston Clan because they stem from the same place. Both the FDLS and Kingston Clan communities are located in remote parts of Utah, and the media and the internet are censored. Both communities use a more socialist model of government, any money earned from jobs goes directly to the leaders of the compounds. Lastly, the education system is used to indoctrinate the children of the compounds. The curriculum is selected by the heads of the communities and teach about religion.
