FJAAK, a berlin based Techno/dance duo who have been creating waves in the electronic scene with their energetic DJ sets. I was lucky enough to experience a FJAAK show in previous travels around Europe. This is where my love for Techno began. "After discovering the word analogue, it was evident that the duo found more enjoyment in manipulating sounds on machines than they did just clicking a mouse"(Thomas, 2021). I've taken inspiration through FJAAK by jamming and playing live in my room creating different looping rhythms on the TR-8S drum machine and experimenting with sounds through synths like the prophet 6. The influence of jamming live is where thoughts and ideas become a reality.

Michael Cavanagh, drummer for King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. It was after the first time I saw Michael Cavanagh make his way around the kit where I realised there was so much more to drumming. Experimenting with polyrhythms, percussive breaks, hard fast fills, double kicks and jazzy swings, Cavs or Michael Cavanagh is open to so much diverse drumming. Specific rhythms and patterns that Cavanagh has used in previous albums continues to get me behind my kit and practice on a genre which I never would of considered playing. Experimenting with these genres has been the most difficult yet enjoyable part of playing drums. "Chad smith and Danny Carey were the drummers I loved as teenager, but then you start to dive into who their influences are, guys like John Bonham, Buddy Rich and Max Roach" (Cavanagh M, 2023).

One of my favourite songs growing up was "you give me something" by Jamiroquai due to dad having the cd in the car on repeat most mornings driving to school. It was my first encounter with old school acid Jazz/future funk which soon became a regular listen. The euphoric and nostalgic chord progressions constantly being used throughout their songs is something that stands out to me more and more and is something I want to be able to incorporate through my music.

John Bonham was a highly influential English drummer for notorious band, Led Zeppelin from the 60's through to the 80's. Bonham took large inspiration from Jazz greats but has paved his own path by combining pieces of jazz, rock and blues, creating his own unique sound. Bonham would solo for 30 minutes mid set while the band took a break. "He’d typically start by hand drumming on the kit, followed by congas, timpani work and even hits on the gong before busting into absolute fury around the toms"(5 Reasons Why John Bonham Was a Drumming Genius - Drumeo Beat, 2022). Triplets were a large part of Bonhams play style and you can hear this in a fill from the song "Dazed and confused" at 4.57.

Danny Carey, drummer for "TOOL". To put it simply, Danny Carey is a genius. Carey has such a good understanding of rhythm making it easy for him to alternate between very difficult time signatures. Tool write their songs based around the fibonacci sequence. "The fibonacci sequence is the sequence of numbers starting with zero and one, steadily increasing where each number is equal to the sum of the proceeding two numbers"(Mitchell, 2019). For example (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,etc). These mathematical sequences allow Carey to incorporate polyrhythms and polymeters into tools songs, allowing us to hear multiple time signatures happening at the same time.

SMITH, 2017). "By the time he was 4, he had no memory of ever not playing the drums. His gift became his destiny without ever asking his consent. It chose him" (Mcdonough, 2020).

Stevie Wonder's influence on Jamiroquai is unquestionable. His groundbreaking fusion of soul, funk, and pop genres left an indelible mark on Jamiroquai's musical evolution. "He was among the first musicians to exploit synthesizer technology" (Smith, 1995). Wonder's knack for crafting melodious compositions, innovative use of synthesizers, and socially conscious lyricism ignited Jamiroquai's unique "future funk" style, seamlessly blending infectious melodies with insightful themes.

"Earth, Wind & Fire proved the power of black music. The awesomely talented band rose to prominence in the Seventies by bringing together the sounds that came before it - jazz, blues, R&B, pop, gospel, African roots, funk and deep soul - making an impact that transcends race, cultures and time" (Weigner, 2000). Mills is known for his relentless, hypnotic rhythms and innovative use of drum machines and synthesizers. "I see techno music as a special form of storytelling.
