Helping students record and represent knowledge gives students the opportunity to show their knowledge in a variety of ways. It also helps students differentiate between information that is critically important and information that is supplemental. It also improves engagement, which is necessary in learning. Informal outlines, academic notebooks, and dramatic enactments are three strategies that help students record and represent their knowledge.

Students can use typical outline tools such as numbering, bullet points, indentions, and Roman Numerals, but with different technology types. I use a strategy like this when I number the steps to solve a math problem on the left side of the paper and have the example of that step on the right side.

Students use academic notebooks to record their notes, reactions, and questions throughout the course. In the case of my math classes, it ends up turning into a textbook that students can use during the class and as a reference for future classes.

Students can act out different events, processes, or concepts from the lesson. They can demonstrate how to do a math concept or even act out examples such as positive or negative integers or slope. These can be stored in academic notebooks or shared for others to see. This can be a very engaging and motivating tool for students. I know someone who does use this strategy in their math class and most of the kids love it.

Google has notetaking apps in the Google Drive and tools such as Evernote, Slides, and Jamboard are all ways for students to record information.

Students can record themselves acting out a concept, explaining how to do a math problem, or recreating an even in history. I video, Loom, Peardeck, are just a few of the tools that can be used to create a digital product.

The biggest tip is providing structure for students when it comes to creating videos and online tools. The teacher helps students create and organize their notes and begin this from the start of the year. Students need to have clear expectations and know what is acceptable and not acceptable when it comes to creating and sharing their videos and notebooks. Provide structure and expectations to help making things go smoother.
