On the twenty-ninth of January in 1737, an Anglican woman named Frances gave birth to a little baby boy named Thomas Paine. The little boy was an only child and will be his whole life. His dad named Joseph was a Quaker and a person who makes corsets. A Quaker is somebody that is a Christian, but has a good amount of different beliefs. They also tried their best to make the people's life better. A corset maker is a type a tailor that makes special clothes called corsets. His parents used to fight because the had different religions. This made Thomas think about what is now Freedom of Religion.

Thomas Paine isn't what you call the best student. He only learned English and Math. He didn't really go to college either. Overall, he wasn't having a good life in a lot of areas. He first went to help his dad as his apprentice. He actually wanted to be in the navy. He was an officer too. He basically tracked down burglars and got taxes on bad drugs like tobacco. He quit that to not liking it. He had been quitting and getting fired at a lot of jobs now. He was now poor and miserable. One day, he finds Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin tries to get him to come to America. He did end up coming to America in 1774. He got the same job as an officer, but he left that job later. He created and debuted his first pamphlet. Later, he became a manger in the editor field in the Philadelphia Magazine. Then, he wrote Common Sense in 1776. He ended up selling more and 150,000 copies. Common Sense is a pamphlet that tried to get people to support the cause of writing the Declaration of Independence. He was now a popular pamphlet writer.

Thomas had a few ideas during this time. He really didn't like the fights his parents had because they had different religions, so he helped create the Freedom of Religion. The Freedom of Religion gives you the power to have your own religion. Like I said before, he helped a lot to get the Continental Congress write and edit the Declaration of Independence. He did this by writing Common Sense. He also didn't care that everybody hated him at first. This true dedication turned him into one of the most popular people of the 1700s. He also changed and helped it too. I have already mentioned what Common Sense was, but it was his most popular publication which is still known today.

What I Think About Thomas Paine

I think that Thomas Paine did a lot of influencing to our government. Without him, there would be a lot of people in our country not allowed to be in this country. This is because their religion might be different. We also would still probably be under the King of England. He is somebody that turned his bad life into a good life the helped so many people. I think he influenced even the very smart people like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. He did this with very little education. I think he is naturally brilliant, and he influenced the government with this brilliancy.
