Hi I’m Any. I’m from Brunei. Currently taking Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication (Digital Media Production). This is my Semester 1.5.

I use my phone everyday, can’t live without them. It has everything that I need and as an introvert I’m more active on social medias! Hence the bad eye vision 💀!!

I could say my perspectives on things change especially being exposed more on socials. With technology advancing, I have to keep up with the latest updates and trends to be and stay aware of the environment.

I often use Instagram and Twitter, to connect with friends and family and up to date with news. For streaming, I’d usually watch content on YouTube, Netflix and Disney+.

Not everyone is privileged or be given a free access to medias. It is difficult to understand and acknowledge the new media and advances tech.

Age wise, education wise, financial wise and many more could be factors that resonates with inability to use or get access towards medias.

I’m turning 20 this September… ew no NOT YET, IM STILL 19 AS OF NOW .. yes..

I would say I majorly use two apps, Instagram and tiktok , mainly for entertainment and to keep myself informed about things going around in the world.

I am a firm believer of “nothing is entirely good and nothing is entirely bad. Both exist within everything” and that’s what I think about the effect of the new media to my life during the lockdown period. New media allowed us to stay connected and informed virtually whereas in the bad light, new media has also been misused to spread fake news to create unnecessary panic.

I would say I prefer the way things are now in terms of the new media as the new media has evolutionarise the experience of online shopping and many more due to the pandemic.

Personally, WhatsApp would be the most important form of media for me as it is the platform everyone else around me and myself uses on a daily basis to communicate. However, if I could no longer access to WhatsApp, I wouldn’t think the world is ending though. Naturally, I would just move on to a different accessible communication new media platform.

Hi, I'm Michael. I'm currently studying brand management and advertising. In terms of media, I find most of my entertainment through Youtube.

However, for me, the most important form of media would have to be communucation apps, like whatsapp and instagram. I noticed that I particularly value interacting with my friends, be it online or physically, during the lockdown. Consequently, i can on ocassion feel listless if I don't converse with friends for an extended period of time. Being unable to meet my friends physically during the MCO, I downloaded discord and proceeded to use it on a near daily basis to chat with my friends, both during and after classes. While it still didn't compare to hanging out with them physically, it allowed me to see and chat with them nonetheless. Prior to the pandemic I was never particularly into social media, having no real interest in posts, stories and such. After the lockdown, while still not the most avid user, I greatly appreciate the communicative abilities that social media allows.

Personally, I prefer the way things are now. It's undeniable that new media brings with it various new challenges and obstacles, but I believe that its benefits greatly outweigh it's cons.

My name is Nik Farra Arisha, 19 years old, a student of Mass Communications (Advertising & Brand Management). My hobbies are listening to music, watching Netflix/Kdrama/Anime and playing games. I love cats. I got 2 cats. Koko and Kiki. My go to app is TikTok, which is surprising to me, considering the fact that I didn’t see my future self using TikTok after the cringe and embarrassment I had when I made musicallys in highschool. I swore not to use TikTok or any similar apps, and here I am, with over 2 hours a day of screentime. TikTok affects my daily life in various aspects. I go on TikTok for outfit inspirations, for life hacks, I even learned that I wasn’t BREATHING PROPERLY. Of course, it is also a source of entertainment. I love watching short documentaries of serial killers or unsolved crimes. TikTok has become a huge part of my life that I am on it everytime I eat, laze on my bed, and even on the toilet. I am probably chronically online.

I remember how TikTok gained traction during pandemic, which was also around the time I downloaded it too. Since people were stuck at home, people wanted entertainment and to be socially connected. I think TikTok helped with that. People hopped on trends like dancing, making the dalgona coffee etc and it honestly warmed my heart seeing how people are connected with one another on one platform.

However, if there is one form of media that ceased to exist, I hope it is not Whatsapp or any texting apps. Imagining a world without Whatsapp is crazy. I do not know how people in the US survive. I use texting apps to.. well, text people?! LOL so ya pls dont disappear. These apps are very convenient and I’ve used texting apps like Telegram, Whatsapp, etc for the longest time. I think it would heavily impact the world in a sense where communicating with people may be harder. Another one form of new media I cannot live without is music streaming apps like Spotify. Imagine living without music. I do not want to live in the era of cassettes and CD’s. I love Spotify. My life would be bland without music streaming apps. If music apps and texting apps disappeared, that means I’d have to send letters in envelopes (which I did) and literally buy physical album copies again (which I also did). No thank you.

If these two media disappeared during the pandemic, I think the world would go insane. Since people of all ages use TikTok and texting apps like Whatsapp, I think the older generation would be struggling more without Whatsapp. Texting apps are simple and convenient for them, especially for aunties and uncles who likes sending “Good Morning” text messages and quotes. The younger generation, I think, would be more affected if TikTok was gone. It has become a prime source of entertainment and it has also impacted the marketing industry. During the pandemic, businesses were struggling and TikTok has helped small businesses gain attention and possible customers.

Do not ask me why I am on my photos for 13h 👹

My name is Lee Yiki, I’m turning 19 this year and I have been a faithful resident of Petaling Jaya for my entire life. And I am currently in semester 1.5 of my degree in digital media production. :'))

Personally, new media was able to provide a fair amount of entertainment to me, one prominent example would be the vast amount of content produced by streaming platforms such as Netflix. 📺 📽️ I would say this form of new media is my best companion as I am an avid viewer of TV programs and films. Other than that, I also rely on Instagram to stay updated with the current affairs within my circle of friends. 📱📱 Through the function of "story posting",
communicating with my friends was convenient and effective as we would be able to share the recent events that happened in our lives. 🫶

Before the pandemic, I relied heavily on hanging out with my friends 😄 as a form of socializing. However, when the lockdown was initiated, my friends and I began utilizing more online platforms such as google meets or discord to chat with one another. As of now, we would occasionally chat online with one another whenever we can't meet up physically, which enables us to communicate with each other despite not being able to see each other. 🙃 ⭐️❤️

Overall, I think the pandemic has challenged the mass to adapt to an online environment, thus, creating a whole new experience utilizing the new media. 📲 For example, workplaces have begun adapting the concept of “hybrid mode” where employees can choose to work from home 🏠 instead of coming into the office every day. This has greatly boosted the mental well-being of employees as they are no longer required to work from day to night, thus decreasing the amount of mental stress. 🤯🤯

Hello everyone! My name is Janny and I am 20 years old. This is my second semester at Taylor's University. I am currently studying digital media production for my entire degree. I'm an easy-going person who likes to make new friends, so you're welcome to come and talk to me 🥰

During the pandemic season, the new media made my life easier. Since we weren't allowed to go out during that time, I relied more on the media itself. In my daily use, I use communication tools like WhatsApp, Instagram, FaceTime, etc. the most. These tools bring me closer to my loved ones because we can text and call whenever we want.

My life was completely different before and after the pandemic. Before the pandemic, I was a more outgoing person who was very active in talking to people and enjoyed socializing. However, after the pandemic, due to staying at home and not going out for long periods of time. I think I was afraid to talk to people and felt awkward at times. However, it's much better now than before because I'm slowly going with the flow and opening up my comfort zone.

Next, I would say that WHATSAPP is the most important form of media because it helps us connect with people and stay in touch with them. However, if I can no longer use WHATSAPP, I am okay with that because there are now more communication media platforms that can replace it. For example, Messenger, Wechat and IMessage.

I use new media as a tool to get information so that I can be able to know what's going on around the world. I also communicate with my family and friends using new media such as Whatsapp, and I use it as entertainment tool such as watching movies and playing games haha. The differences of my life between before and after the pandemic would be I don't need to wear a mask except for when I am sick before the pandemic. However, I need to wear a mask no matter where I go to protect myself after the pandemic, but sometimes I will also forget to wear a mask. As new media is so important for people now, if I could no longer access it, it will be trouble.

I spend almost a few hours a day on these apps.
We went to school and met our friends physically like normal. However, when the happen of Covid pandemic, we had focused to do in online especially during important exam periods. After using daily new media during the pandemic, this allowed me to slow down and focus more on my mental and physical wellbeing. This cohort used the extra time wisely, prioritising growing myself and focusing on self-development, learning new skills and pursuing new hobbies.
For me, I usually use WhatsApp and Microsoft Teams for my assignment and communicate with my teammates and friends. I couldn’t imagine that how going to survive if I don’t have these media.

Hi I’m Rene Adlina from DMP.

New media usage is heavily used as in i use it almost every minute of everyday as it is convenient, especially during Covid 💅.

During the pandemic I used loads of app such as Microsoft for class and WhatsApp for socialisation but the most important YouTube which has become my main source of entertainment. I hate being bored so using it is beneficial but I do hate the fact of ads flooding throughout every video.

New media has showed different perspectives of every individual and I find that fascinating as now instead of keeping it in anyone can simply tweet it out. It is one of the best yet worse development of the future but hey who’s complaining when we’re getting more information from people. It is arguably much easier to communicate with people now with new media without the awkward phase of trying to find out their interests. Just searched them up of Instagram and see how it goes.

I find myself too dependent on new media from the excessive uses of it and will take a long time to get used to if it ever disappeared. Before the pandemic my usage was admittedly quite high but now, unhealthy 💀

I'm Salleh, before the pandemic I'd kind of always be outside all the time. I didn't spend as much time online because I'd be busy with classes or meeting friends.
Being stuck indoors changed the amount of news consumption I do, learned more, read more. This was during the heights of BLM so I went down a tangent of learning about history and marginalized groups.

I mainly used:
The Google Search bar for news and books.
YouTube for political commentary but also entertainment.
Discord to talk to people.

I call 2022 the glitch, because I met so many people I should have never met, entered relationships that should have never existed.
I was happy at the time, but transitioning back to in person has made those relationships not possible. Obviously I'm an outlier because I'm fortunate enough to be fine if a lock down were to happen whereas blue collar workers lost their livelihoods during that period.

There were also positives to the pandemic for marginalized groups. Many issues were platformed more prominently in public discourse because people were terminally online. Issues that were previously ignored as people were busy with their day to day lives. This also led to increased information dissemination in things like NGOs and charities that are more accessible to those who need them. I believe that our interests are not geographically constrained to the nation state we are born into, a single mother in Pakistan has similar interests to a single mother in Nairobi. Increased internet access through social media platforms bridges this gap and helps with community formation.

Hi, my name is Azmi and I'm 20 years old from Malaysia. Currently studying MassComm (Advertising and Brand Management). New media has had a significant impact on my life, especially into the later stages of my teen years. It has allowed me to connect with those I am close with and be kept up to date with the happenings in their lives. I am also able to get notified on different news events that I care about, be it my hobbies or world news. The apps that I use the most would have to be Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok. I'm addicted to these apps as I love seeing what's going on in people's lives, be it my direct friends, celebrities, or random people around the world.

I would say my life before and after the pandemic were 2 very different eras of my life, as I changed greatly. Before the pandemic, I was a very timid and shy person who was extremely introverted. After the whole COVID situation, I would say that I am pretty similar in the way that I act but majorly different in different aspects such as my appearance, personality, and the way I interact with others.

Personally, I think the most important form of media to me is the apps Grab and WhatsApp. I rely on both of these apps daily in order to directly communicate with the ones I care about and to order food. Without both these apps I feel like my life might go into shambles, as I order food extremely often. If I could no longer access these apps I would have to do things like letting my family know my schedule for the day beforehand by telling them verbally, and I would have to start preparing my own meals by cooking and whatnot.

I feel that for vulnerable groups of communities, such as the Orang Asli and Aboriginals, the pandemic would not have affected them as much as it has impacted me. This is due to the fact that they survive daily without the use and reliance on new media, and that their lifestyle revolves around self-sustenance. However, they might not be able to receive news as fast as we do, so that may be one of the aspects that they potentially suffer from a lack of media usage.

For example, we can use Google and Facebook to find out what is going on during lockdown and so on. Prior to that, people were generally informed through newspapers, but the advent of new media has made it possible for everyone to get more information in the fastest way possible. As a result, new media makes our lives easier.

The most important form of media for me is Tiktok. Without this platform, I wouldn't be able to learn more about trends around the world. Besides, I wouldn't be able to making new friends from all over the world from this platform.

I think countries like Ukraine that are going through war ,Africa and villages everywhere may not have access to these media because of the effects of the epidemic.

Hiii I’m Song Tangzhe 19 from China

In China at the worst of the epidemic, we even need to stay at home for several months ，it was through new media so I was able to know What's going on in the outside world and we were able to help each other in our communities through social media like bought some food or share some necessary things.Maybe every apartment building would get a “building leader”to make a group in WeChat(WhatsApp)And get know about what people in his building need. Then send it to the group with other building leaders and use Grab to get thing or contact with some shopkeeper to order things.

And there are huge differences between the life now and before because face-to-face communication with a real human not a screen and social are better than communicate online and that makes me feel more warm more passionate. I can hang out with my friends go out to dinner or watch movies at any time. And At the same time, as an international student, offline courses maybe more useful for me. For those vulnerable groups, they are unable to use the media for some reasons, which has brought a lot of inconvenience to their lives. It is very regrettable. Perhaps some communities will have workers to help them contact others or obtain living materials

I think the important media form for me is WeChat because communication is the most important in my daily life, whether in work, study or other aspects. Without this kind of chat software, communication will return to the original face-to-face form, and I may lose communication with my distant friends and have a better relationship with my neighbors.

Heyyo guys, my name is Tyan Jia. I'm 19, turning 20 this and taking Mass Communication.
As a phone addict, I would say my daily new media use is very high. Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter are like my everyday routine to turn on and check out what is happening now in society. And I would say, I've become a phone addict because of the pandemic. During the lockdown, I have nothing to do besides scroll my phone again and again. Even though I'm in the class of 2020, I'm willing to study psychology theory online instead of studying my Sejarah :)
And new media had allowed us to access too much information online and I've been staying in my echo chamber for too long. So when the pandemic ends, I found out that I don't know how to socialise with others physically. But I used to be that "social butterfly" in the class. I still pick up after a few months of taking classes physically.

Most importantly, new media allowed me to connect with my friends virtually and access a lot of information I needed. Therefore, my quality of life has improved, but my body health has worsened. (because I binge-watch movies the whole night, yay). So, if I am not able to access all these new media, although I will be more healthy, it's harder for me to find the information needed for assignments and hard for me to talk with my friends without any limitations.

And also, I've been volunteering in a program in helping B40 students. And I've been in touch with these vulnerable groups of people who do not have many chances to access these new media. And when I asked how they feel when they are not able to join the classes virtually during the lockdown, they told me that they feel helpless, because they are no one to assist them and no one is approachable. Therefore, we should be appreciating the ability to access new media and use it wisely (unlike me).

Hii, my name is Raida, I'm 18 and I am from Madagascar.

Honestly, I'm constantly on my phone, the first thing I do in the morning when I wake up is checking my messages and my friends' stories and at night it's the same.
My life before and after the pandemic didn't really change, because during that time I was in my country and we didn't really respect the restrictions and the lockdown rules (🤡). So I still saw my relatives and we lived a "normal" life. The only thing that changed was the fact that classes were online so I spent a lot more time at home.

I think that the most important media for me is Whatsapp, because it allows me to communicate easily with my family and as I'm very far from them it's important for us to stay in constant contact. So one day if the app comes to disappear, I think I will just use another app lol. No if all the apps that allow me to communicate with my family disappear one day I don't know what I'll do honestly, I will start to send letters hahahah.

Then for people who don't have the chance to access the same media, I think things are a bit more complicated for them. I will take for example the people living in my country. Note that Madagascar is a very poor country and the majority of the population don't have access to internet. Their only way to get information is through TV or radio and then most of them are only informed about what happens in the country and they don't know anything about what happens outside. Then for communication, it's by phone or by message, so I would say that it's okay.
Then there is also the fact that social media is a good way to make your voice heard, to rebel against an injustice, to share hidden situations. People in my country and in many other countries I guess, don't have access to that so it's harder for them to share what's really happening in the country.

Hi,my name is Rachel. DMP student

For me i use social media daily such as instagram & TikTok. New media also affects my daily life a lot cause I have learned to record my daily life and upload it to those apps, to share with others people that my daily life.So that's when you need to add some content or activities to your life so that people can have fun with the daily life you share. So the most obvious difference before and after the epidemic outbreak is this. I have more physical activities in my life and a lot more variety than I did before the outbreak, and I don't need to stay at home all the time and have nothing to do.

I think the most important form of media today is Instagram in social media, because it allows users to take content and upload photos and videos to their accounts. Users can also view the content shared by others and make online purchases from their accounts in certain shops. The app exists to facilitate.

But,if i could no longer access it.I can share my life with people offline, maybe with family, with friends, and definitely face to face. Online shopping can also be done in a department store, and I think it's important to buy in person.

For those vulnerable groups that may be affected, they can be unable to quickly access some of the new information. The news received may be slower. Conversely, in urban areas, news is often received so quickly that the value of the advice or news becomes less important.

I am studying bachelor of mass communication in public relations and marketing.

I can't live without new media in my life. New media such as social media platforms, like everyone is on social media and it is more easy to stay connected with each other.

Before the pandemic, it takes around 30 minutes to go to my high school from my house because the distance to school from my house is very far. And during the pandemic, by using new media like zoom and Microsoft teams to attend online classes, it save more times and I don't need to wake up so early and prepare myself to school.

For me, Instagram would be the most important since everyone is on Instagram. And most of us will share our daily lives using story, post and even reels so we can know each others more. If I could no longer access instagram, I will use Facebook instead of Instagram because their features are basically the same.

I think new media affects the elderly the most. I use new media every single day, and the platform that I use the most would be YouTube. I use YouTube to keep up with current events and world news, and also for entertainment such as watching documentaries, video game playthroughs, and livestreams. I also use Twitter to keep up with current events and trends. For communication, I predominantly use Discord and WhatsApp depending on who I am contacting. I also enjoy playing games, mostly mobile as I can't afford a console :'D I also dabble a little in translating and video editing.

As I have always been an indoors person, I have been using new media since an early age. Life hasn't changed much for me since before and after the lockdowns. Me and my friends were already using platforms such as Discord to connect and play games with each other before the pandemic. New media has no doubt made a lot of things convenient for students such as myself. Submitting assignments digitally, downloading reading materials and rewatching lecture recordings are all incredibly helpful. However, many communities lack such privileges and have to rely on more traditional and difficult means to acquire knowledge, especially during the pandemic where lockdowns were prevalent.

Although I'm trying to reduce the usage as we are slowly transitioning back into the normal life before the pandemic, I still heavily rely on it as my form of communication, entertainment etc. Platforms like TikTok, Youtube, Netflix, Disney+, you name it, I am on every single one of them! Except for Facebook as.... yeah :,)

My life practically turned 360 after the pandemic, I was a completely different person before and after mentally and physically. If it weren't for New Media, I'd be a corpse right now. I heavily relied on Google meets and Whatsapp to communicate with my friends by texting and video calling them. As we didn't have much to do during the pandemic, we would always call for hours and hours talking about ourselves, our past memories, played games and many more to deepen the connection with each other which I think really strengthened our friendship. I would say I am a bit more thankful than regretful that the pandemic happened. As it did help me grow in some aspects, and it was mostly thanks to to New Media as the Tv shows/movies that I've watched during the pandemic really impacted the way I think as of today and how I emotionally support myself. Though I did have a hard time coping during the pandemic as I couldn't see my friends physically at all ,which really detrimental to my mental health as I am the type of person who is energized by meeting people. However with just a simple tap, I could immediately call them and talk to them virtually, which did make things slightly bearable.

I would feel the most important form of media for me would be all the communication apps that are available as without it, it would make things much more harder in the modern world we live in. Video calling friends from a different country or those who are just a street away made it much more easier maintaining all the friendships I had, as well as emergencies that I encounter where I could immediately contact my family from wherever I am is what made me realise how important these apps are to me. Before this, things like Zoom or Microsoft Teams weren't so prominently used as we could just simply travel to the place of meeting and do what's needed to be done. However due to the pandemic, we were forced to adapt with the online environment and change all our work ethics to it. Now, I can't imagine our seniors going to lectures and tutorials everyday in campus pre-pandemic compared to now as I am so used to having online classes. I much prefer how things are now as it is more convenient not having to travel everyday to campus and keeping things simple at home, however if I could no longer access these, I would have to force myself to use the old methods our grandpas and grandmas used to have.

I would say the most vulnerable groups and communities would be our generation compared to the old citizens as although they would have trouble learning and adapting to the digital world we live in now, they were completely fine when technologies weren't so advanced. Especially with things like scanning a qr code may be a natural thing for us, they would struggle more than we thought. Without the proper knowledge and know-how's, it would be nearly impossible to live everyday without being anxious of what's about to come, which is why I would think the old citizens survived fine during the pandemic.

Hello my name is Xinyee and I’m taking Digital Media Production.

I use laptop to do school assignments and use phone to connect with family and friends. I think that new media keeps us up to date with the latest news and makes us to have a fulfilling time at home.

Also, I was still in high school before the pandemic and also got along well with my high school friends. After the pandemic , I went to university, did part time jobs and made some new friends there.

I think that the most important form of new media for me is WhatApps. Because it is the easiest way to communicate with others and you can use it at any time to contact your family or friends across countries with time and location issues.

Lastly, I think it is difficult for African countries or backward groups to access new media and the pandemic makes them more difficult to know the world news.

Hi my name is Hafidz, I'm turning 20 this year (feeling like I'm 50 already). My daily new media usage or consumption is basically whenever I feel bored or wanting to past the time with some entertainment. My daily new media mostly consist of Youtube, Tiktok, Twitter, Netflix.

Before the pandemic new media usage (Social Media) for me wasn't a really big part of my life, but during the pandemic it changes everything because everyone was in lockdown and with the amount of free time everyone had with the lockdown, almost everyone was posting about their daily lives and how they're basically dying inside because of the lockdown. I think because of that I showed a slight interest in other people's lives and how some of it was kind of relatable because when I was in lockdown all I did was play games with my friends. So for me lockdown was kinda fun? because I was able to just forget about studies and just have fun and play games with my friends. For post pandemic and lockdown I had the opportunity to catch up with my friends and how they coped with the lockdown.

The most important form of media for me is Whatsapp for communication and Youtube, Netflix, Twitter for entertainment. I feel like I wouldn't survive without them because it takes most of my time everyday.

For the vulnerable groups and communities that would be affected by the lack of access to these medias are older people and parts of the world where technology is not easy to access.

Hi, I am Choi Yong Le, study in Mass Communication (Digital Media Production), and this year I am going to be 21.

I usually use WhatsApp, WeChat, Instagram and more. It facilitated the connection between me and my family or friends. Even though we far apart, we can still use it to celebrate some festival and strengthen our relationship.

Before the pandemic, I am still a high school student, and I am living in school hostel. Our school is very strict, it did not let us to bring our phone. So we just using our phone during weekend. This leads me use new media platform lesser. During the pandemic, we all must stay at home for quarantine. And we have to switch to another mode for class, which made me use media platform more than before. So now, after the pandemic, It has become part of my daily life.

In my daily life, I use YouTube the most. And I think I cannot live without it. Whenever I watch it, it makes me feel very relaxed and seems to be far away from the hustle and bustle of the world.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, many people in the lower class such as B40 cannot enjoy these conveniences or entertainment because they do not have money to buy electronic products. And also octogenarian and nonagenarian cannot keep up with the progress of the times, so when the world switch to another mode after the pandemic, they eliminated by the world.
