My Spanish background means my family came from Spain, a country on the continent of Europe. As I learned in history class, my ancestors may have been part of the Spanish Conquest led by Hernán Cortés. 

Hernán Cortés was a Spanish solider. His first expedition was to Cuba, but from there he was sent to explore the Americas. 

Cortés arrived in Mexico in 1519. The Aztecs were already native to the land,  therefore, Cortés had to conquer them. 

Cortés continued to gain more land for Spain and grow their empire.

The Spanish Conquest makes me who I am because my family originally came from Spain.  After settling in Mexico, many Spaniards married the natives. With their cultures mixing, the population grew and people began to move around Mexico and towards America. My ancestors lead the pathway to America where I live today.

My Catholic background comes from the religion brought by the Spaniards to Mexico. 

In 1519 through 1521 Spanish conquistadors traveled to Mexico and converted the Aztecs to Christians.

The Spaniards wanted the Aztecs to become Catholic because it was a way to gain control and wealth. The Spaniards also believed that converting the Aztecs to Catholicism was a way to serve God and repay him for all the good things he has done.  

These events shaped me into who I am today because the spread of Catholicism in Mexico allowed it to become the primary religion. My ancestors inherited the customs and beliefs that are part of the Catholic religion.  Today, I continue to believe in the same foundation of the Catholic church as my ancestors did.
