G6 - Social Innovation Challenge by Nally

1)Start to write down all that you know, including your guesses (= your hypotheses) about each part (box) of your project/business idea.
2)Identify your riskiest assumption. If you have a new project/business idea, you will probably need to start with Box A. Do you genuinely understand your customers´ underlying needs?
3)Start the experiment to derisk your riskiest assumption and to validate your hypotheses.
4)Keep on until all your hypotheses are validated and you have either found a sound project/ business model, pivot, or concluded that you better do something else.

One factor that causes the increase of CO2 in the ocean is the trash or garbage in the ocean. According to 2015 research published in the journal Science, the Philippines, an archipelago comprising over 7,100 islands, is the world's third-biggest polluter of ocean plastic behind China and Indonesia. Plastic pollution, particularly in the ocean, is gaining global attention as more study demonstrates the risk it causes to ocean acidification and marine life.

The Philippines' plastic market is worth more than 1283.71 million US dollars (2016), with a compound annual growth rate of 6.11 percent (forecast for the period 2018-2023). Packaging trash accounts for about 48 percent of all plastic used in 2017 and is a major contributor to marine litter and plastic pollution. The local government entity is primarily in charge of solid garbage collection (LGU). Local governments in many parts of the country lack access to garbage collection and recycling services. Inefficient collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal systems, when they exist, have a negative impact on wastewater and drainage systems, resulting in marine litter and plastic pollution.

Moreover, according to World Bank, there were approximately 2.7 million tons of plastic waste each year and an estimated 20% were thrown in the ocean. Hence, the Philippines' coastal populations, as well as the fishing, shipping, and tourist sectors, are particularly exposed to the effects of marine debris.

There was limited public awareness of ocean acidification, hence people were underestimating it as if it was not a big problem. They were not aware of the ocean acidification. Hence, they don’t know what’s happening in our ocean and marine life. One of the alternative solutions is the solution that is doing right now domestically is the plantation of the coral reefs but this would not directly solve the problem but it can effectively preserve the lives of coral reefs. Another solution for solving the plastic pollution in the ocean was the Plastic Bank and Blastik Project. These organizations are similar in a way that they both promote ethical recycling systems for which it allows individuals to collect plastic waste in exchange for money. Another solution was to recycle plastic waste into building materials. The competition settled that there was already an organization that collects plastics and also recycled plastic wastes into new products in order to generate revenue.

The Splish Splash was there to generate profit while sustaining the environment but whether it survives or perishes is determined by external and internal factors.

One of the economic factors that would affect the market is inflation. Inflation usually happens when the quantity of money exceeds the supply of goods and services. This is followed by higher raw material, manufacturing, and utility expenses. Goods prices must rise in order for a business to continue. As a result, unless employers boost pay depending on the amount of inflation, inflation can lower consumers' purchasing power. The inflation rate in April 2022 was 4.9% which means that consumers need to pay higher costs. And the technology of changing plastics into fabrics was not cheap hence, the price of the products would also be higher. From the BSP, inflation in 2023 would be projected at 3.9% which will be lessened by 1%, this means that consumers will be more affordable and prices of the goods will also be lessened, consequently a much lower price.

Companies are beginning to see the necessity of thinking long-term and addressing the societal effect of their products and services, according to Harvard Business School Professor Rebecca Henderson, who teaches the online course Sustainable Business Strategy. The positive social effect refers to the actions taken by corporations and individuals to solve difficulties in their communities. Splish Splash was focused on the issue of Ocean Plastic Pollution that causes Ocean Acidification. Since the business has been newly established then there would be less social impact on the community. It is expected that there would be less awareness from the consumer. But with advocacies, and other public awareness campaigns, people would gain more information about the current situation of Ocean Plastic Pollution and Ocean acidification. By showing how Splish Splash was engaging in ethical business practices and sustainable actions for the environment, there will be more consumers attracted.

For now, the technology for remaking the plastic wastes that are recyclable and recyclable into fabrics was very mature global, however, current sustainable fabric production requirements made from plastics were still less in the Philippines. Hence, it could be costly at first and this would be a weakness since the price of the products would also increase. But as the technology becomes more mature, then this cost will be lessened hence attracting more consumers.

The main driver of increasing ocean acidification is plastic pollution which is caused by mismanagement of plastic waste which only means that plastic litter is not properly managed and recycled. With this plan, the researchers aim to divert ocean-bound plastics and reduce greenhouse gasses and mostly reduce ocean acidification which would boost the positive effect of economic social benefits. In eradicating plastic waste, it could not only help marine diversity due to little to zero ocean acidification but also offer an efficient energy consumption in households and factories. Beneficiaries such as marine life advocates and experts, marine life advocates, and anti-global warming advocates. The said group of individuals are potential customers mainly because this advocacy converts plastic, specifically ocean plastic litter to durable and eco-friendly clothing. The said benefit has a direct positive relationship with the advocacy’s value proposition.

Surplus is mainly generated by supply and demand. With the advocacy plan, the target is to generate sales which equals the demand of the revamped plastic clothing produced by the advocate institution. The target is to sell the most. On the same note, increasing sales is the main driver of increase in production. In case of a positive surplus demand is high and production is high. In this way, the advocate institution would develop more designs for consumers to purchase. Moreover, having a high demand would keep the advocate institution running since the institution’s main vision is to lessen acidification in bodies of water to increase marine diversity.

Plastic products can take 500 to 1000 years to degrade; the biggest concentration is through bodies of water, most especially the ocean. In the researcher’s advocacy model, the institution will get plastic supply from the plastic bank and revamp it to a fashionable clothing line. In addition these plastics are second use plastics that the team would utilize to successfully make a clothing product to sell. Therefore plastic is a renewable resource but it would take a maximum of 1000 years to degrade. Plastic revamped clothes have a longer life span rather than other types of clothes. It is more durable and can last for years. After the lifespan of the plastic revamped clothes, the end users can stil;l recycle the plastic and make other products to be utilized again.
