The element which Ratliff terms transmission can perhaps be considered to be the element less formally known as tone and emotion; something that isn't exactly tangible but is perhaps the most defining characteristic of any and all pieces of music. As Ratliff says, "tone doesn't demonstrably exist in composed notes. It exists only in played notes. It's the most human part of music, the carrier of emotion" (Ratliff 51). Since music is generally regarded as one the most easily accessible and human art forms, it can reasonably be assumed that without this element of transmission, the most human part of music, music itself wouldn't be half of what it is. As Ratliff includes in his playlist, The Beatles' "Julia" is a prime example of transmission, as the tenderness in Lennon's voice upon singing the titular name implies a great depth of emotion, giving the song as a whole a greater degree of emotional merit. Not included in Ratliff's playlist, Real Friends' "Dead" is a piece of music wherein the vocalist, Dan Lambton, belts his lines with such vulnerable, emotional ferocity that the song as a whole delivers, or transmits, his emotions to the listener.
