But before you go out and buy the biggest, nicest piece of furniture your home has to offer, it's important to understand the different types of furniture and the best way to use them.
  • First, think about the space you'll be using the piece in. For example, a floor-standing cabinet might not be the best choice for a living room because it takes up too much space.
  • Next, consider the kind of use you envisage for the furniture - is it for storage, decorating, or as a place to relax? Once you have a good idea of the space and what you need the furniture for, it's time to look at the different types of furniture.
There are three main types: floor, table, and chair. Floor-standing pieces are great for areas where space is at a premium, like a small bedroom or office. They're also good for areas where you'll be spending a lot of time, like the living room or kitchen.
Table and chair sets are great for dining rooms and formal homes. They come with a table and chairs that can be moved around, so you can fit as many people as you want at the table (or screened-in area).
