Similar to Vietnamese, reading integer amounts in English also follows the rule of reading the number first and adding the currency unit after it.

For example:

• $3 – three dollars

• $99 – ninety-nine dollars

• $356 – three hundred fifty-six dollars

• $1,500,000 – one million five hundred thousand dollars.

Note:

• If the amount is greater than 1, you must add “s” to the currency suffix.

• Replace “one” with “A”.

For example: $123 – A hundred and twenty – three dollars.

How to read change in English

The rules for reading odd amounts are similar to the rules for reading decimals in English, then adding the currency after:

• Read the integer first.

• Currency unit.

• Read “point – period” or “and – comma”.

• Read the following decimal number.

• Add the smaller currency at the end.

For example:

• $12.50: Twelve dollars and fifty cents.

• $56.78: Fifty-six dollars and seventy-eight cents.

• $100.00: One hundred dollars.
