Food was provided by fishing, hunting, and collecting wild vegetation. Regular crops were provided by farming in the Valley only. 

Shelter was provided by making clothes from animal skins and houses from trees. The Mohawks did not set-up their settlement there, but did roam the mountains to fish and hunt.

The land in the Mohawk Valley was flat and fertile, so it could support farming. The Mohawks decided to build their settlement there.
