The chapter opens with Holden leaving the train station and finding a phone booth because he wants to give someone a call. He contemplates calling one of three people: his little sister Phoebe, who he explains is very easy to talk to, Sally Hayes, a girl he had a romantic relationship with, and Carl Luce, a guy he went to school with in the past. He decides against calling any of those people and finds a cab to take him to a hotel. He asks the driver where the ducks go when the pond freezes over and the driver responds in a rude way. Holden gets to the hotel and dislikes his room but doesn't care because he is too sad about his current situation. Lastly, he decides to call Faith Cavendish and claims that he is an old friend of Eddie Birdsell.

"I keep making up these sex rules for myself, and then I break them right away. Last year I made a rule that I was going to stop horsing around with girls that, deep down, gave me a pain in the ass. I broke it though, the same week I made it - the same night, as a matter of fact." (Salinger 70)

This quote shows rebellion & conformity because Holden is obeying the rule he made for himself.

Quotes & Explanations - Isolation & Alienation:

When Holden is in the cab on his way to the hotel, he asks the driver if he knows where "the ducks [go] when [the lake] gets all frozen over" (67). The lake freezing over and forcing the ducks to take shelter somewhere else symbolizes Holden's situation. Whenever he finds himself in a tough position when everything in his life freezes up, he wonders where he should take shelter, just like the ducks. He can't return to his home because like the lake, he is not welcomed. This reflects the theme of isolation and alienation because Holden is left on his own when he must find a new place to live as he is no longer welcomed in his home or school.

"We got to the Edmont Hotel, and I checked in. I'd put on my red hunting cap when I was in the cab, just for the hell of it, but I took it off before I checked in" (68). Holden likes his hat but he thinks that it's not normal and wants to blend in with the rest of the people in the hotel and to not like weird with a hunting hat on.
