CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat, and its name refers to the short repeating DNA sequences stored in the genomes of bacteria and other microorganisms. This system helps bacteria and other microorganisms to be immune from viral attacks, as seen on the figure above. What makes this mechanism game-changing is that we can apply this system with the Cas9 enzyme and gRNA, which now becomes the CRISPR-Cas9 system – a gene-editing tool capable of modifying genes of organisms, such as plants, animals, and even humans. This new system can help induce genomic mutations through cutting a part in a sequence of the DNA of an organism (courtesy of the Cas9 enzyme), guided by the g(guide)RNA. This revolutionary technology is much more efficient than previous DNA editing techniques, and will become a staple in the future genetic research. Some applications include possibly providing cures to some genetic disorders and designer babies (babies genetically-engineered with specific traits)

More information about this technology can be read here:

https://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2014/crispr-a-game-changing-genetic-engineering-technique/

https://www.yourgenome.org/facts/what-is-crispr-cas9

Thus, combustion engines convert chemical energy into mechanical work. Decades of engineering by many scientists went in to designing the internal combustion engine, which took its (essentially) modern form in the latter half of the 19th century. The engine ushered in the Industrial Age, as well as enabling the invention of a huge variety of machines, including modern cars and aircraft.

It is considered a life-changing discovery because until now it remains the only effective treatment for people with type 1 diabetes, it helps the body in regulating the blood sugar level and keeping it in a healthy range. They first tested it on a dog but after more experiments and research, it was used on a 14-year-old boy dying from type 1 diabetes. It was a complete success because within 24 hours the blood sugar level of the patient dropped.

Hence, the discovery of this bacteria is one of the most interesting breakthroughs from the past year; Japanese scientists claim that it has the ability to decompose and even eat real plastic. Pollution is a top priority that needs to be resolved and Ideonella sakaiensis may help induce the world’s plastic crisis. Although it can only eat a particular type of plastic (PET), this bacteria can provide help in building industrial-scale facilities in order for these enzymes to chew on piles of landfill-bound plastic and spray them on the mountains of plastic that accumulate in the rivers and oceans.

Anesthetic is the substance used during the treatment of anesthesia. The utilization of anesthetic plays a big role in our lives, since one of mankind’s greatest fears is the pain of surgery. With the help of anesthetics, it can reduce the excruciating pain, numb body parts, sedate and can control the state of a patient's total unconsciousness.

The faster the world moves away from fossil fuels and toward a zero-emission future, Tesla believes, the better. Electric vehicles, batteries, and renewable energy generation and storage all exist on their own, but when they are combined, they become even more powerful - that is the future we want.

These creations are one of the key assets that signify modern civilization, as water filters serve the sole purpose of providing safe, and clean thirst-quenching water inside the comfort of your homes. Water filtration gets rid of any suspended bacteria, parasites, algae, fungi, viruses, and even the unique unpleasant taste of tap water. Further research has opened even more doors to greater creations like portable water filters, to promote safe and sanitized water at any place, especially in places like Africa where water scarcity is seen pole to pole.

First-ever performed in 1910 by Hans Christian Jacobaeus, laparoscopy provides a minimally invasive way of performing surgeries. This allows surgeons to access the insides of the human body through small incisions instead of large ones. Compared to traditional surgeries, laparoscopic procedures provide lesser pain and recovery time but still yield optimum results. Additional research done about laparoscopy in the last century allowed experts to polish and popularize the procedure in the medical world.

It is believed the use of a mask alone is not sufficient to provide an adequate level of protection against COVID-19. In areas where the virus is circulating, masks should be worn when you’re in crowded settings, where you can’t be at least 1 meter from others, and in rooms with poor or unknown ventilation. It’s not always easy to determine the quality of ventilation, which depends on the rate of air change, recirculation and outdoor fresh air. So if you have any doubts, it’s safer to simply wear a mask.

As our society becomes more technologically advanced, and with COVID forcing us to do most of our work at home, the demand for Internet access is extremely high. Back in May 2019, American aerospace manufacturer SpaceX launched 60 of their prototype Starlink satellites into the Earth's orbit. Starlink is SpaceX's way of providing a fast, low-latency, internet service to the world, Starlink satellites are located at a lower altitude, about 547km compared to most satellites that are at 35,405km. With this low altitude, SpaceX is able to provide high speed, low-latency internet and communications services for residential, commercial, professional, and institutional purposes around the world. Currently, Starlink's latency is around 30 to 40 milliseconds on average which could reach to as high as 88 milliseconds and as low as 20 and data speeds from 50 to 150 megabits per second. SpaceX plans to launch a total of 42,000 satellites to increase Starlink's reach to other countries and is now at 90,000 users, which is expected to reach 500,000 in 12 months.

Ry, C.

Unfortunately, an average of 22 people per day or almost 1 person each hour dies because of not being able to undergo organ transplant. In the 18th century, researchers and doctors conducted experiments of organ transplants on humans and animals. Organ transplant is the best way to treat terminal organ failure. Within the last decades, organ transplants are said to provide excellent results to patients and also to the growing population of elderly with comorbidities. As of now, following the technique performed by Dr. Joseph Murray, saved over 400, 000 lives worldwide. With the discovery of organ transplants, many lives were saved and improved people's quality of life. A single organ can save the lives of up to 8 people and improve the lives of up to 50 people.

Sources:

Learn about the History of Transplant - OPTN. In comparison, Starship together with its boosters attached, towers over Saturn V (The rocket used by the Apollo 11 mission), also it's more powerful and cost significantly way less. Space travel today is cheaper and will be more affordable not only to the large companies and government but also to the public in the future. The cost of Space travel will not limit scientists anymore and it will lead to more missions therefore more scientific advancements and discoveries.

Flood-Resistant Crops

"Without efforts to ensure our crops adapt, the security of the world's food supply is at risk." - University of California

Crops are typically imported and exported through other countries in agricultural countries, and we benefit from them. However, when the rainy season begins, the majority of crops will perish due to excessive flooding. Thanks to new research, flood-resistant crops were developed and discovered. In the study, the researchers looked at cells that live at the tips of plant roots, as roots are the first responders to a flood. These areas contain cells that can assist a plant in becoming more resistant to flooding. Drilling down even further, the researchers examined the genes in these root tip cells to determine whether and how their genes were activated when they were submerged in water and deprived of oxygen. They discovered that the genes responsible for flooding adaptations are known as, Submergence up-regulated families (SURFs). This trend is likely to continue as the climate continues to change.

AC has the ability to transport electricity over a long distance. Most devices (large factories, houses, villages, buildings, etc.) that are directly connected to the electrical grid operate on alternating current, and electrical outlets in homes and commercial areas supply alternating current as well. Devices that require Direct Current (DC), like laptops, usually have an AC adapter that converts alternating current to direct current. Alternating current is the current of choice globally as it has many clear advantages compared to direct current.

In 7.9 billion people around the world, there are 422 million people that have diabetes, and every year about 1.6 million deaths are being recorded because of it. Anton H. Clemens invented and created the first blood glucose meter and glucose self-monitoring system in 1970. These are also known as a glucometer, and it helps monitor the fluctuating glucose level of patients especially those who are suffering from diabetes. It assists the healthcare workers, just by looking at patients' blood glucose profiles, in diagnosing and scheduling their patients' activities and medication. A blood glucose profile is a snapshot of a person's blood glucose fluctuations the whole day. Also, it helps patients in monitoring and controlling their blood glucose levels even at home. With this invention, we can prevent and lessen the damage of low and high glucose levels to the body's heart, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

Sources:

Tonyushkina, K., & Nichols, J. People generally suffer from a lack of transportation and are unable to go around in a timely manner.

In the mid 1900s, the well known German scientist Paul Ehrlich set about developing medications to treat infectious illnesses. He was the person who coined the term "chemotherapy" and characterized it as the use of chemicals to treat illness. Over the years, chemotherapy drugs (chemo) have effectively treated many individuals with cancer. Chemotherapy may shrink your cancer or hinder its development, which may help you live more and help with your side effects. Chemotherapy stays outstanding amongst other approaches to treat cancer because it attacks cancer cells that we can see, yet can't eliminate through surgery or radiation. Furthermore, it is the best and frankly, the best way to treat the cancer cells we can't see. If you have chemotherapy after surgery, this may reduce the odds of the cancer coming back. Cancer treatment is improving and evolving quickly, more (and better) prescriptions and steady treatments are accessible to assist patients prevent and manage potential side effects. At present, there's no evident cure for cancer. However, recent advances in medicine and technology are helping us to create a cure. Through chemotherapy, individuals with curable and incurable cancer can improve their quality of life.

Sources:
Chemotherapy. (2020, August 21).

A hundred years ago, solar energy was used for steam and machinery. The "photovoltaic effect" was discovered by Edmond Becquerel which allows the conversion of sunlight to solar electric energy. In 1893, Charles Fritts discovered the invention of a solar cell, which leads to the device that we know today as solar panel. Using solar panels can lower electric bills, lower carbon footprints, reduces water pollution, and reduces strain on finite resources. Solar energy is renewable, unlike fossil fuels. It is a clean source of energy, as it does not emit greenhouse gases and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere which can trap heat, that causes climate change.

As time progresses and various things evolve, many discoveries have been contributed by research. Accordingly, the agricultural sector employed new ways of planting because of such findings. It includes hydroponics. Hydroponics are the growing of plants by submerging it in water and eliminating soil. It only uses water and nutrients in order to grow various fruits and vegetables. It was discovered by William Frederick Gericke while conducting research at the University of California. He was also the one who named this way of growing plants.

It has numerous advantages to the environment and society. First, it helps in the preservation of water. Due to its name, people can get the wrong impression that it uses excessive water. However, it actually preserves water because water used for the plants can be recirculated; contrary to when it is being seeped by the soil. More so, the use of harmful chemicals that can ruin the plants and environment (such as pesticides) can be avoided. Since soil is not used, soil-related diseases, bugs, and pests cannot infect the plants. It also saves a lot of money due to its low maintenance nature and lesser need for labor. Furthermore, it facilitates a micro-climate which means that it has its own house or structure away from harmful pests. Conditions inside this hydroponic house can be controlled, hence crops can be grown throughout the year. Lastly, it produces higher quality fruits and vegetables, and grows more crops than normal farming.

DNA is a molecule that keeps the genetic information of a human person. Recombinant DNA, invented by Herbert W. Boyer, Stanley N. Cohen and Paul Berg, is the process of taking a piece of one DNA and combining it with another DNA strand. It is a technology that made it possible to insert a human gene to genetic material of a common bacterium. The most common recombinant process is the production of insulins. Scientists build the human insulin gene in the laboratory, then, they remove a loop of bacterial DNA known as a plasmid before inserting the human insulin gene into the bacterial DNA. It is then put into fermentation tanks before purifying it to produce human insulin.

This process has helped many people with production of various vaccines and gene therapy. It is important to note that this could not have been achieved without the help of research, thus, solidifying the fact that research studies are crucial to the society.

In the 1940s, people who were diagnosed with mental disorders like melancholy (what we now know as depression) and schizophrenia were lobotomized. A lobotomy is a form of psychosurgery that uses a leucotome (medical instrument shaped like an icepick) to penetrate the brain and sever the connections in the prefrontal cortex. Most of the people who were obliviously subjected to this inhumane process were left bedridden, and others had negative side effects like seizures, lethargy, incontinence, and change in personality. Thankfully, members of society started to notice the problem and took it upon their hands to solve it. Not long after, lobotomy was deemed "contrary to the principles of humanity" by The Soviet Union and was banned in several countries like Japan and Germany during the 1950s. At present, we now have a better understanding of how to ethically help and treat people with mental disorders. This can be done by (1) Talk Therapy which was developed and improved by research psychologists like Sigmund Freud, Joseph Breuer, Carl Rogers, and Albert Ellis. Secondly, treatment can be done with the help of psychoactive medicines like antidepressants which were invented by Roland Kuhn in a psychiatric hospital. These drugs increase the activity of chemicals called neurotransmitters in the brain which would help lessen the symptoms of depression and anxiety. All that we know now are worth decades and even centuries of research passed on from one scholar to the next. The torch is now passed on to us so we can pave the way for a better and healthier society.

By the time medical oxygen lived on as a quack remedy, researchers were insisting on whether continuous application of oxygen could save lives or not. In 1970, in a study of patients with severe pulmonary disease, it was discovered that while 62% of those who were untreated died, only 28% of patients receiving continuous oxygen did. This eventually put an end to the controversy, paving the way for greater research into the myriad benefits of oxygen in the subsequent 50 years.

Oxygen is a critical component of patient care at all levels of the healthcare system. It became a life-saver for COVID-19 patients who developed pneumonia and low blood oxygen level called hypoxaemia. In many cases, the Sars CoV-2 virus can cause lung inflammation. Hypoxaemia, the leading cause of death among COVID-19 patients, can occur in the most extreme situations. Patients could regain regular breathing with the help of oxygen therapy. To keep patients alive, they may be placed on a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine or a ventilator if they require more oxygen.

However, with technological developments, the function of limb prostheses (artificially made body parts) is progressively improving. A prosthesis can help an individual (who has undergone amputations due to conditions such as cancer, diabetes, or injury) to cope better with his or her everyday activities because it replaces the part that has been lost and now enables him or her to thrive much better. Therefore, prosthetics or the creating and fitting of an artificial body part is very significant and beneficial to the people in society who are in need of prosthetic devices or replacements to the body parts that have been lost in their existence.

From what I have read, there is an overwhelming need for prostheses in developing countries. The availability and accessibility of prosthetics are significant concerns to these people because, without the assistance of a prosthetic device, they may not be able to function, succeed, or be accepted by society.

Defibrillators are devices that give an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a regular heartbeat. They're used to prevent or treat arrhythmias, which are irregular heartbeats that are either too slow or too rapid. If the heart abruptly stops beating, defibrillators can help revive it. Defibrillators are designed to function in a variety of ways. The goal of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which are found in many public places, is to save the lives of persons who have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. In an emergency, even unskilled onlookers can utilize these devices. Other defibrillators can help patients who are at high risk of dying from life-threatening arrhythmia. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and wearable cardioverter defibrillators (WCDs) are two types of defibrillators. ICDs are surgically implanted within the body, while WCDs are worn on the body.

Modern sonography, or more commonly known as "ultrasound" or "ultrasound scanning", is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses small probes that send sound waves through parts of the body and detect the waves that echo back to provide an image that can help diagnose or examine inside the body without having the need to use the naked eye. It was first used for clinical purposes in 1956, in Glasgow, Scotland. The technology used for modern medical ultrasound scans was based on an instrument that could detect flaws in nautical ship infrastructure. The images provided by ultrasound scans, or sonograms, can provide really significant information that can help diagnose or treat a wide range of medical conditions, and can also, famously, provide a great help in pregnancy health.

These are namely, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). AR, VR, and MR have their fair share of benefits but XR has a wider scope of characteristics by creating a fully immersive experience. It enables real and digital objects to coexist wherein scenarios can be constructed to be realistic, engaging, and safe all at the same time. Due to the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, the innovation of XR minimizes person-to-person interaction but can still connect people, have them share the same experience, and virtually collaborate in real-time. It is used for pre-visualizing and planning in which will significantly help us in avoiding such situations that are still unknown. Moreover, extended reality (XR) is being used to train and to reduce the high risks of critical procedures in healthcare, manufacturing, and many more. Aside from preventing such situations, it can help people create solutions that can aid or lessen the risk provided.

Electricity wasn’t invented since it already existed as a natural force in our world. It was discovered by Benjamin Franklin. During that time, scientists were experimenting on static electricity when Benjamin Franklin took a step forward ahead of others and came into a hypothesis that electricity has the lament of positive and negative charge that made it possible for electricity to move between these elements. It was not until 1752 when Franklin's famous kite experiment took place. He boldly thought of using the kite as a means of proving his theory, he tied a metal key and flew the kite during a thunderstorm. The electricity from the storm clouds flowed to the metal key and shocked Benjamin and thus proved his idea. This gave way to a lot of possibilities. In modern days, energy has been essential to the daily life of people and the growth of the economy. Being able to harness energy without damaging the ecosystem is crucial in security, climate change, food production, and strengthening economies. Increased access to electricity improves education, entertainment, health, comfort, protection, and productivity.
